Throughout my pregnancy so far, even though I’m only 16 weeks pregnant, I’ve noticed a drastic change in my eating habits.
Gone are the days when I craved an apple and didn’t want chips. Gone are the days when I got dressing on the side (now I eat salad basically because of the delicious ranch dressing). Gone are the days when I didn’t have a sweet tooth.
Oh yes, I’m a literally a different person right now.
It’s funny how pregnancy makes you want food that you typically wouldn’t want. I can name off a ton of various foods that I used to never eat and I love them now. Let’s see, there’s:
Taco Bell,
McDonalds,
Wendy’s,
Candy,
Ice Cream,
Chocolate,
Chips (all kinds),
Ranch,
Pizza
And really the list could go on and on…
It’s sort of depressing for me. I’ve always been such a healthy and mindful eater and now I feel like I can’t get enough junk. Where’s the substance? Where’s the healthy cravings (besides fruit)? It’s not residing in this pregnant body. All I have to say is thank God for prenatal vitamins!
Without taking my prenatal vitamins daily, I don’t know how this baby would get any nutrients. (Well, ok, perhaps that is an exaggeration, but you know what I mean.)
I feel like pregnancy is the one time in my life that should surpass any other time. It should be the time of all times to really want to eat healthy. But how do you do it when you can’t even stomach the thought of grilled chicken and veggies? Really, how? It feels so impossible.
There have been a few times that I’ve tried to force myself to eat grilled chicken and veggies and after a few bites, I’m done. I’ve had all that I can have without making it come back up. It’s bad. It’s like I have an allergic reaction to healthy foods. Anyone else?
Oh and with the headaches I’ve been getting, I’ve had a Coke. I know it’s not the best thing to drink. Believe me, before pregnancy hit, I never even touched the stuff, regular or diet. But sometimes it is the only thing that will take the edge off of a really bad headache. Tylenol is a joke for me. It doesn’t work and I’ve always been an Advil or Excedrin kind of girl anyways.
Sometimes the headaches are just that bad and I have to cave in to having some caffeine. Sure, I’m adding an extra 39 grams of sugar and 140 calories to my daily diet, but what’s a girl to do in that situation?
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not a believer in the whole “Oh, I’m pregnant so I can eat whatever I want. Pregnancy is my excuse.” I’m not like that. In fact, if it was healthy to not gain any weight and still have a healthy baby, I’d be all for that. I’m not eating junky types of food because I’m pregnant, but because I’m pregnant, I’m wanting these types of food. Make sense? Healthy stuff just doesn’t do it for me like it used to.
And just for the record, please don’t think breakfast, lunch, and dinner are junk food. So not the case. I guess I’m just eating more junk food than I ever have before and that worries me. I’ve only gained 5 pounds this far, and my doctor hasn’t said anything, so I’m guessing I’m good on the 5-pound weight gain.
I guess it’s just the extra snacking on chips, candy, cookies, and ice cream that’s throwing me for a loop. Oh and with that being said, I really want Taco Bell for lunch. A soft taco sounds delish right now.
Let’s see if Tarzan will go and get me one…
