16 weeks pregnant: Is your pregnancy whispering for healthy food or is it screaming for junk food?

by Jane on February 9, 2009 · 12 comments

16-weeks-pregnant-cravingThroughout my pregnancy so far, even though I’m only 16 weeks pregnant, I’ve noticed a drastic change in my eating habits.

Gone are the days when I craved an apple and didn’t want chips.  Gone are the days when I got dressing on the side (now I eat salad basically because of the delicious ranch dressing).  Gone are the days when I didn’t have a sweet tooth.

Oh yes, I’m a literally a different person right now.

It’s funny how pregnancy makes you want food that you typically wouldn’t want.  I can name off a ton of various foods that I used to never eat and I love them now.  Let’s see, there’s:

Taco Bell,
McDonalds,
Wendy’s,
Candy,
Ice Cream,
Chocolate,
Chips (all kinds),
Ranch,
Pizza

And really the list could go on and on…

It’s sort of depressing for me.  I’ve always been such a healthy and mindful eater and now I feel like I can’t get enough junk.  Where’s the substance?  Where’s the healthy cravings (besides fruit)?  It’s not residing in this pregnant body.  All I have to say is thank God for prenatal vitamins!

16-week-pregnancy-cravingWithout taking my prenatal vitamins daily, I don’t know how this baby would get any nutrients.  (Well, ok, perhaps that is an exaggeration, but you know what I mean.)

I feel like pregnancy is the one time in my life that should surpass any other time.  It should be the time of all times to really want to eat healthy.  But how do you do it when you can’t even stomach the thought of grilled chicken and veggies?  Really, how?  It feels so impossible.

There have been a few times that I’ve tried to force myself to eat grilled chicken and veggies and after a few bites, I’m done.  I’ve had all that I can have without making it come back up.  It’s bad.  It’s like I have an allergic reaction to healthy foods.  Anyone else?

Oh and with the headaches I’ve been getting, I’ve had a Coke.  I know it’s not the best thing to drink.  Believe me, before pregnancy hit, I never even touched the stuff, regular or diet.  But sometimes it is the only thing that will take the edge off of a really bad headache.  Tylenol is a joke for me.  It doesn’t work and I’ve always been an Advil or Excedrin kind of girl anyways.

16-weeks-pregnant-caffeineSometimes the headaches are just that bad and I have to cave in to having some caffeine.  Sure, I’m adding an extra 39 grams of sugar and 140 calories to my daily diet, but what’s a girl to do in that situation?

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not a believer in the whole “Oh, I’m pregnant so I can eat whatever I want.  Pregnancy is my excuse.”  I’m not like that.  In fact, if it was healthy to not gain any weight and still have a healthy baby, I’d be all for that.  I’m not eating junky types of food because I’m pregnant, but because I’m pregnant, I’m wanting these types of food.  Make sense?  Healthy stuff just doesn’t do it for me like it used to.

And just for the record, please don’t think breakfast, lunch, and dinner are junk food.  So not the case.  I guess I’m just eating more junk food than I ever have before and that worries me.  I’ve only gained 5 pounds this far, and my doctor hasn’t said anything, so I’m guessing I’m good on the 5-pound weight gain.

I guess it’s just the extra snacking on chips, candy, cookies, and ice cream that’s throwing me for a loop.  Oh and with that being said, I really want Taco Bell for lunch.  A soft taco sounds delish right now.

Let’s see if Tarzan will go and get me one…

I've always heard you crave junk food if your carrying a little boy.. and more healthier foods with a girl!!

Trust me.. nothing has sounded more better then a huge bean and cheese burrito dipped in nacho cheese sauce from Taco bell... Oh yummy!

Thank goodness for all of your comments about the "naughty" food choices that seem to call us! I am a healthy yoga teacher normally, eating mostly vegatarian and fish, now I cook up my healthy meals and barely get through them. I love chips, pizza, and crave burgers (having not eaten them for quite a number of years I havent yet gone there!).

I am 15 weeks pregnant, and shocked at my inability to eat my salmon and vegatable dinner this evening, now weighing up the pro's and con's of getting some chips from my corner shop.!
Thanks from a pregnant mummy-to-be in the UK!

OK. I must be totally wierd. I am 16 weeks pregnant and my body is doing the exact opposite of yours. I CRAVE healthy foods...I can't get enough apple's, oranges, boneless skinless chicken breasts, fresh veggies, carrots dipped in hummus... The sad thing is that before I was pregnant I had a HUGE sweet tooth. I love Sweets! However, now that I'm pregnant whenever I eat sweets I get morning sickness TERRIBLE. I can't eat anything chocolate or sweet or unhealthy like chips and french fries. I get sick. In fact, I lost 10 pounds the first month of my pregnancy. I have not gained weight yet.

I'm on my 15th week 1st preg. And yep, I can't eat chicken breast, although I can enjoy the dark meat. Sunday we had KFC and....haha I enjoyed the CRISPY chicken. Normally forget it, I'd order the original and take off the skin. Well I did ok this time, I only nibbled on a few crispies. I was a health concious person too trying to lose weight. It was going good too. Typical burger at carl's jr (my fav!) is the 6 dollar low carb burger, no mayo, no cheese. But recently I ordered the original 6 dollar burger WITH EVERYTHING! ohh mannn was it gooood! What I try to do is request hecka lettuce. They are good about that. I wish I can crave the healthy stuff. Apples and mandarins are my fruit right now. I've been fluctuating 2-3 lbs so far. I guess that's pretty good. I'm naturally overweight by 15-20lbs so I don't...really don't want to see the 200lb mark again. (recently lost 40lbs before preg) Hope my cravings don't get worse. =)
Tried for 5 years w/ endo/tumor/cyst and God blessed us finally with a baby! yay!

During my first pregnancy all I wanted was fruit and super healthy food (I'm with you on the chicken though) I only gained 18 pounds during the whole thing and it was great.

This time, fruit makes me ill and I WANT meat. Like all the time. Fries too. And about 20 other things that are so not on my approved foods list. I just ate ice cream at lunch. I hate ice cream.

I guess every pregnancy is different. Perhaps we should all meet after our deliveries for a workout class! :)

I only gained 5lbs this month! Woot Woot! And it's all in my tummy, well almost. My face is already showing the weight gain too.

Thanks everyone! It's so good to know that I'm not the only one that is eating junk type of food. It makes me feel better bc I don't want to feel like I already suck at taking care of my baby.

Strange thing is, I walked 4 miles today and felt awesome doing it. I found that I ate differently today and that I felt differently after that exercise. Could it be that subconsciously I didn't want to jeopardize all my hard work? I'm going to walk again tomorrow and we'll see the results from that. It might just have been a coincidence, or perhaps I'm turning over a new leaf in the second trimester and wanting healthier food. Hmm...

I am the same way, sister. I want to eat anything and everything and I focus so hard on trying to get the nutrients I know are good for me. Its work!! Sheesh!!

I was the same way. I couldn't STAND chicken, and my only food aversions? Broccoli and cucumbers. BLECH, the smell of cucumbers STILL gets to me and my daughter is a year old this week!

Hang in there. Hopefully your cravings will let up a bit soon... but I have to say, I STILL harbor some love for BK's Chicken Fries. (Which I freely admit is gross).

I was the exact same way when I was preggers-- i couldn't stand the site of chicken and really only wanted cheeseburgers and fries. I say as long as you drink a ton of water, exercise (I highly rec prenatal yoga) then you should enjoy yourself. 5 pounds is perfect at 16 weeks... My entire preg i think i gained 33 and have lost it all (16 months later). So enjoy. Cute blog btw!

J-Ko’s last blog post..25 RANDOM FACTS... AGAIN!

I'm with ya honey. Hubby had to make a run to Wendy's last night at 10p because I wanted a burger, desperately. Oh, it was heaven. I too usually order the jr with no mayo, etc, but last night I ate a 1/4 pounder with mayo. It was so good. I did have a side salad instead of fries though because I can't stand their fries, but was mostly after the ranch dressing anyway. I've been drinking lots of iced tea lately. It helps with the headaches too and I love it unsweetened.

And pizza. Oh heaven. My mom just laughs when I ask her if we can have pizza or I can get a frozen pizza when I stay with her on the weekends. She says as long as it stays down, I can eat whatever I want. Works for me. And I've hardly gained any weight at all. 0.4lbs last month and according to our scale, only 2lbs this month.

Yesterday I went out to an upscale burger place with friends. Back in the day, I would've ordered a salad with dressing on the side and no cheese or maybe a chicken breast sandwich with no mayo and set aside 1/2 to take home.

This time? Nah, I went for the full meal deal, baby! Cheeseburger with fries AND mayo! And you bet I ate every last greasy morsel. It was fantastic and I didn't even feel stuffed afterward.

That's just one example of my over the top eating habits since the little urchin inside me took over. I'm just hoping it's helping him/her grow, rather than just me.
