16 weeks pregnant: New milestone reached

by Jane on February 11, 2009 · 15 comments

16-weeks-pregnant-sneeze-and-peeBeing 16 weeks pregnant has actually been good to me.  No throwing up, not one headache (at least that I remember, gotta love pregnancy brain!), and feeling good enough to make my husband dinner.

While those are all pretty big things considering how awful I’ve been feeling in previous weeks, I feel that you should know that another milestone in my pregnancy has been reached.

What is it, you ask?

The sneeze and pee (the saying reminds me of the “bend and snap” from Legally Blonde).  Let me set the stage for you…

I was sitting on the couch watching sitting when I had to sneeze all of a sudden.  Sneezing, as any pregnant women knows, is just a part of the whole pregnancy thing.  I have sneezed more in the past 16 weeks than I can honestly remember.  Sneezing is just a part of my normal life.

What’s not been a part of my normal life is sneezing combined with letting out a little urine.  And really, I can’t say that I like it.  Oh, but I did laugh out loud at myself.

So picture it:  I’m sitting on the couch, like I said, and I sneeze.  Immediately I felt a little pee come out.  I said, “No!” out loud because I thought it was my imagination playing a dirty joke on me.  I hauled a$$ to the bathroom and saw a little round wet spot on my panties.  I laughed.

(I’m thrilled that I can laugh at myself.  It’s such a good quality to have.  No little bit of urine is going to get this girl down!)

I came back out into the living room and I told Tarzan, “Guess what?”  He was being sort of a grump because he was doing some work and he hates when I bother him, but I ignored his bad attitude.  I told him that I just reached another milestone in my pregnancy, “I sneezed and peed.”

I got him to smile with that statement.  Ha ha.

So I hear that this sneezing and letting out some pee is quite normal.  Hmm, I hope that it’s more rare than normal because I could see it becoming embarrassing if I wasn’t at home.  I mean, it wasn’t a lot of pee, but honestly, who wants to walk around with any bit of urine in their panties.  That stopped when I stopped wearing diapers many, many years ago!

Has this happened to any of y’all?  Do you know any pregnant tricks for sneezing, but not peeing?

And, uh, can anything else come out while sneezing, like from another hole or a smell?  I just want to be able to prepare myself if I’m in public, I’m just sayin’.

I just discovered and LOVE this blog! I soooo feel your pain about "snissing." The mere sound of running water makes me have to go...even if I just went! I peed the floor a little filling the coffee pot one morning RIGHT after I just went. 14 weeks. Gotta long, long way to go... I even pee a little when I laugh too hard!!!

Since I just finished pregnancy number two, let me just say that if you are prone to allergies in any way, this just gets so much worse. Since both of my girls sat low in the womb, I had pressure on the bladder from the beginning to the end.

I had to make sure I took my allergy pill every day or I was a mess. And good panty liners are a must. My preferred brand is/was Poise. Expect it to not stop right away either.

Thank god I haven't had this happen to me .....yet. I guess I don't really sneeze often.

i feel your pain jane (no rhyme intended :) ) my husband thinks its absolutely HILARIOUS when i "sniss".... someday, somehow..payback will be sweet! :)

6 a day? For this same problem? Maybe I should look into these too...

I've heard about this one coming up for me in later weeks. Thankfully, I am already going through about 6 pantyliners per day, so that shouldnt be a problem.

Such great comments! Good to know that I'm not the only one, but I must admit that I am now worried about this. If most of you "snissed" (great word!) in the third trimester, you are right, I'm going to be a mess (literally!). I need to start doing kegels for sure. I've read about how important they are, but I just forget to do them. That being said, I'm sure that I won't be forgetting as much considering I peed on myself basically in week 16. Oh the joys of being pregnant! :)

Wait until Jane wakes up in the morning and finds that I've wrapped all of our furniture in plastic. ;)

Kidding... I love you Jane - sorry for being a grump. Been a long day for me as you know. Just please don't pee on me. Strangely, some people are into that sort of thing, but not this guy!

Yep, had issues with it during the third trimester both pregnancies. CNM said it was something to do with the increase in internal pressure caused by the sneeze.

Kegels help until you get to the point where the baby's squashing your bladder completely. Emptying your bladder as often as possible so there's just nothing there to leak is the most effective thing. Liners are good for keeping yourself dry in a tough spot and can be swapped out often enough to avoid odor.

Ah yes, the ole "sneeze and pee!" I've been there, although I don't think it was this early on for me. More later when I was carrying a bigger baby. You may be in trouble! ; )

I love your blog and following your pregnancy journey!

I haven't sneezed and peed, but I did puke and pee. Yeah, that was fun. I did laugh like crazy afterward and told my mommy friends. It was just too good a story to pass up. At least I was still in my pjs and needed to shower anyway.

Do some kegels, they'll help a bit.

oh yes, right there with you (at 25 weeks). and i'm totally going to be using the term "sniss"! oddly, i've also adopted an odd little double sneeze while pregnant. (double sniss?)

I've heard this phenomenon called a 'sniss'.

Gotta love the sneeze-pee. Wait till week 17 when you have the cough-crap!

Hahaha...I'm sorry, I have heard of this and thank goodness I have never had it happen to me.
