Since I was totally convinced that our little Tarzan Jr. was going to be a Jane Jr., I was not prepared with anything boy related this pregnancy. I really thought we were having a little girl. We had some girl names picked out, and some girl nursery ideas saved.
You can imagine how surprised I was to find out there is a little penis growing on the ultrasound. Back to the drawing board…
For a girl nursery, we had the cutest one picked out. I actually saw it in People magazine long before I was ever pregnant. I saw it and fell in love with it. It was the sweetest little girl’s room. Pink walls, dark furniture, chandelier, and a tree painted on one of the walls. Inside the tree was a heart with the parent’s initials: JT + TT, for example. It was perfect.
I don’t think we can do that for a boy, so I want to go with a very neutral and use lots of cream with a little blue, green, and maybe yellow. I still want to use a chandelier. I don’t think that we’ll have a “theme”; it’ll just be a very soft room. I don’t picture us putting up monkeys and any other animals on the walls. Instead ,maybe we’ll put some quotes or pictures.
This past week, while I was 19 weeks pregnant, I spent some time looking at different nursery ideas. There has been one (it’s the first link below) that I think I love and it could be THE one (that we kind of copy, anyways). It seems to have everything that I want, and of course there will be a few things that we would add to it to make it our own.
I’ve found some nurseries online that have bits and pieces of what I like:
I love everything about this room. The crib, all the monogramming, the bumper, and the crown with sheer drapes. I think this room describes perfectly what I would like for our little boy’s room.
I’m a sucker for animal print, so I love how that was incorporated into this room. I really like his name on the wall, along with the day he was born. And, you can’t go wrong with aqua and brown… It’s a great color combination, but I do think the room is a bit “harsh” for what I’m really looking to do.
I really like the initials over the crib.
4. Jacob’s Room
I like everything about this room. I think it’s a really peaceful space and I like the detail that was used. The whole room looks very clean to me. I think the moon in the corner of the ceiling is a great idea as well!
This room is a bit like Jacob’s room and I especially like the “You are a dream come true” above the crib. It’s very sweet.

I went gender neutral with Beatrix Potter as my original theme and soft green walls. My first child happened to be a girl and my second child was a boy so the gender neutral theme works since they share a room. The only thing I did was get one boyish sheet and crib skirt and otherwise I was set. One thing I will mention is that it’s really not necessary to get a matching crib blanket and bumper because they are very limited use items. You can’t use loose bedding in the crib and the bumper is a safety hazard after a short while. I never even put the bumper up at all with my son. Two less things to buy!
I’m in the middle of creating my own theme based upon birds, owls and trees. The colors are neutral – light greens, oranges and browns – so that they go with girl or boy. My daughter is sharing her room with baby brother and her favorite colors are brown, blue and green – so this works for us. I’m painting a mural on the wall. Haven’t finished yet. Hard to do when you are 9 months pregnant. Our baby room won’t be done before delivery, I’m sure!
We’re expecting a boy, I’m currently 25 weeks, and we plan to use an alphabet theme in the nursery. I’m going to get wooden letters from a craft store, paint them all differently (polka dots, stripes, diamonds, etc) and put them on the wall around the top of the room. I found a wall decal on etsy.com that has the alphabet for above the crib as well. We still haven’t decided if we want a blue or a green room for him, but should probably make that choice soon! I’m due in June.
The baby’s room is quite small, and will only have room for the crib, a dresser and a bookshelf, so I didn’t want to overwhelm the room with lots of design stuff. I’ll probably also use some scrapbook paper to make my own art to frame myself in the baby’s room.
I don’t really have a nursery theme, as we won’t have time to prepare it anyways. We’ll be moving and unpacking until I go into labor. Sucks hardcore! Anyways, I have requested my family and friends to pick items in colors in greens with dinosaurs and stars. His room will be decorated in dinosaurs and stars with natural/oak furniture, eventually. But a lot of this won’t be done until after he’s born.
We did a Lambs & Ivy Bright Butterfly theme for our girls. Had this one been a boy we were planning on a Jungle theme and I was going to paint murals on the walls.
We did a gender neutral nursery, as we waited to learn the sex, but I have a suggestion: you may want to shop bedding for the crib first, and then build your room from that. I found myself really inspired by all sorts of bedding, and was able to discern a price range I was comfortable with from that. We found ours at Target – it was pretty, very soft and has held up very well – still looks brand new after a year! I didn’t want to spend a lot of money as I knew this was something that would be peed/pooped/puked on, but I wanted it to look nice as well.
Our nursery is decorated in jungle animals, but in muted colors. It’s all very calming, and when Madeline arrived we added lots of pink accents to make it a bit “girlier.”
Those are lovely rooms. When my babies were small, I was renting so I could do much decoration. I bought some vinyl temporary border. I remember it was big puffy clouds with sweet bunnies you could place on or around it.
If you like the monogram above the crib in ‘Noah’s room’ above, I have to show you the amazing custom handmade vinyl wall decals you can buy from Rebekah at http://littleloveletters.etsy.com She donated one for auction on my blog for my Breast Cancer fundraiser, and will be offering another custom decal there soon. Look at the lovely monograms she does http://www.triagefromhome.com/?p=183 She’ll do any colours or font style you like and send you email proofs as well.
Trouble is– you’ll need a name for that:-)
you can get those quotes you were talking about from uppercaseliving.com as well. they have an awesome “im a dream come true” one!
We went with a jungle theme. Easy to find tons of stuff to put in it. Might be fitting for the baby of tarzan and jane.
I love my son’s nursery. We spent a lot of time ‘making’ things for it – the wall hangings, the curtains, the curtain rods (simply limbs from a tree), the lamp shade, and more. Because my husband is an avid outdoorsman, we went with a ‘camping theme.’ I love it because it is not blue. Nothing against blue, but having a boy, I knew I’d be seeing blue forever.

*I no longer blog at that site – those pictures are on my original family blog.
If you are going to moving to a town house or apartment, you might not get to paint the walls. I would go for shopping for all kinds of fun bedding, wall hangings, and curtains to make an impact…
We decorated with Eeyore…just fits our style. Painted the walls a lavedar/blueish color.
If it’s a boy, I love the vintage cowboy look. Also thought about a puppy theme. But not sure yet. If it’s a girl, I don’t know what to do. Pink toile with creme colors is pretty and I love pink and green in a girl’s room.
