The joy of swollen pregnancy hands: Trading real wedding rings for CZ wedding ring

by Jane on March 9, 2009 · 12 comments

Getting a new ring when my hands become swollen due to being pregnant. I know the time will come when I will have to trade my beautiful engagement ring and wedding band for another ring to wear while I finish out my pregnancy.  I’ve heard many stories of this happening, and I’m grateful that it hasn’t happened yet.  After all, I’m only 20 weeks pregnant.

But I know the day will come when it’s time… and really, I should be prepared for this day because I heard it can start in the second trimester.

It’s a funny situation.  I absolutely love both of my rings.  I get tons of compliments because they are vintage looking and just breathtaking.  My husband did a very good job designing both!  While it will be a sad, sad day to have to put away my rings, thanks to pregnancy and swollen fingers, I have to admit that I’m just a little excited about the thought of getting another ring that is completely opposite of what I have now.

Really, what girl doesn’t love jewels?!

I was just looking around on Overstock to see what was available and I found a pretty ring.  Sure it’s only $20, but the reviews were good.  I don’t want something that looks extreme fake or costume jewelry-ish because I would feel dumb sporting that on my finger and I know that Tarzan wouldn’t be proud of it either.

(He’s really picky about this stuff.  I wanted a pear engagement ring when we were looking around and I found one that I loved.  Did he share my love for it?  Absolutely not.  I got the, “Um, it looks like you are wearing costume jewelry and I wouldn’t be proud to put that on your hand.”  OK T, point taken and then we continued our ring search.)

Thankfully my fingers, ankles, and feet are still normal looking.  I’m honestly dreading the day that they become swollen and don’t get even get me started on the possibilities of cankles when pregnant.  No thank you.

When I think about pregnancy, there are many exciting things that come to mind, such as feeling the baby move, getting the pregnancy glow (that I still don’t have), hearing the heartbeat, thinking of names, shopping for the baby, growing a baby inside of you, finding out the sex, seeing my husband with our baby, decorating the nursery, and many others.

Sadly, there are also many things that come to mind that are not exciting.  In the least.  For example: morning sickness, migraines, varicose veins, acne, feeling fat, feeling like you never look cute, inner thighs touching, peeing when you sneeze, sneezing all the time and having an endless supply of snot in your nose, just feeling awkward, pregnancy hormones, and now I have to worry about swollen hands, feet, and ankles.

Oh fun.

When did your hands, feet, and ankles get swollen?  Or did you completely bypass this lovely pregnancy stage?

Also, if you were one of the “lucky” ones with swollen hands, what did you do about your rings when they didn’t fit anymore?  And, if you got a new one, how many sizes up from your original size did you go?  I’ve been hearing the norm is about 2 sizes.

My wedding ring and engagement ring are a size 5, so that would mean I would jump up to a size 7. Surely a 7 would occupy my swollen hands in the hot, humid, Houston summer, right?

I've had my wedding rings around my neck, on a chain, since week 25 or 26. It was Valentine's week, which made me feel double weird about it. But they look nice there, and I didn't have to get a substitute ring. They tend to puff up pretty bad when it rains, but the rest of the time, they were ok.

And my hands and feet have been huge for the past week, since I'm at 37 weeks. Drinking lots of water helps a little, but it's just like having Mickey Mouse's hands and feet. Rest keeps them from getting worse, but it doesn't make them better. Be careful! Swollen and numb hands have made me really clumsy! I mean, clumsier than last month!

"Really, what girl doesn’t love jewels?!"

me.

Hi

I stumbled on your blog today and I love it! I'm just passing 15 weeks and I've been blogging my journey and I love how you both are blogging yours. My bloke is blog-phobic so no chance!

I'll be keeping an eye on you as you're not that far ahead of me really. So far our differences are that I've not been sick, I've lost weight up until recently, and where I live is heading into winter which I'm sure will be a blessing.

On the topic of this post - my rings actually feel looser this week, while I am finally going to have to go shopping for bigger pants - go figure!

I've started to have swollen feet & calves for the last few days (I'm 26 weeks now) and I find that elevating them in the evening and a nice footrub from my husband do the trick to sort them out again by morning.

As for rings, I haven't taken mine off yet, but am pretty sure it'll be about a week or so and then I'll have to take it off or have it cut off. I stopped wearing my engagement ring long ago, and have only been wearing my wedding band. I'll probably get a cheap fake wedding band just to last till the swelling goes back down, because I can't stand the "and she's not married omg" looks that I'd probably get when out and about visibly pregnant with *gasp* no ring!

Thankfully, I haven't swollen up noticeably. Even though you can't see it or notice it much, doesn't mean it's not there. My wrist get a little puffy from time to time, and the only way I can tell is because they ache because it's putting pressure on tendons and all that fun stuff. Also, my feet aren't a problem, unless I'm standing in the shower or walking around for a long time, like at work. After showers and work, my feet hurt so bad and swell, but not a HUGE amount. I've been told drinking lots of water, HELPS but won't stop it.

I did have to quit wearing my ring until several weeks after the birth. I didn't go out and buy one. It never occured to me. DH and I used to joke about how I was sleeping with a married man since he still had his ring, of course. But that was really the only swelling I noticed until the very end. At about 32 weeks, we went to the beach for a long weekend. WARNING: pregnant women burn very very easily. I never burn and I fried in an hour (with full clothes on). I swelled up like a balloon because of it. It was horrible!

ps- I drink THREE nalgene bottles of water per day...they hold 40 oz each

At week 33, my ring didn't fit, so I went to Kohls and got one for $6. It's a wedding band with fake diamonds and honestly, nobody has even mentioned it! I went 1 size up.

I'm 30 weeks and no swelling yet (knock on wood). My shoes and rings fit just fine. My mother had 4 kids and never had much swelling, so I'm hoping to take after her as I have throughout this pregnancy.

I've always taken them off for the last month or so, just to make sure they don't get stuck on. I drink a lot of water, but still swell up. I never even thought of buying a bigger size to wear those final weeks...

Mine were never swollen and I attribute it to all the water I drank. You would think I wouldve retained a lot, but I didn't. I even wore my rings during my c-section!

I didn't have a problem with my hands until the very end, but I took them off around 29 weeks because I didn't want to have the cut off. I then wore them on a chain around my neck. It was actually worse after Adia was born. I couldn't wear them for like 3 months! I didn't notice that me feet and ankles her swollen until I was put on bedrest at 29 weeks. After just a couple days in bed, there was a noticeable difference. If you just lay with your feet up for a bit every day, you shouldn't have a problem. Once again, it was way worse after Adia was born. My left foot was like 10 times its normal size for about 10 days. It was awful. I remember the same thing happening to my friend after her c-section and we laughed about it.
