24 weeks pregnant: Can’t seem to shake this cold

in Mother to be, Pregnancy Week-By-Week

Having a sore throat and a cold when 24 weeks pregnant is just awful! Go away! It’s awful to get sick, but pair having a cold with being 24 weeks pregnant and it’s the worst thing.  I’ve only had this cold since last Friday, but it feels like forever and I wish it would leave my body.  I don’t know what else to do.

I’ve been drinking lots of water and even green tea with honey and lemon, taking Actifed, resting, and I still have it.  The worst part was the sore throat that I had.  It was painful each time I swallowed and that’s no fun.  You can imagine how happy I was when it went away about 2 days ago.

I hate having a sore throat and haven’t had one since 2004 when I got my tonsils out.  I guess having one every 5 years isn’t too bad.  I was thrilled when my throat felt normal and thought that dealing with a headache, stuffy and sometimes runny nose, itchy eyes, and sneezing wasn’t that bad compared to the sore throat.

And then, about 45 minutes ago, my sore throat returned.  Ugh.

I had a great blog post planned for today because we were up really early for an ultrasound (everything turned out great by the way).  But I’ll save that post for tomorrow.  Right now I’m off to finish my tea and call it an early night.

Oh, and if you know of any home remedies that get rid of a cold, sore throat, or any of the above symptoms, pass them on!

I’m 21 weeks pregnant and am also sick. My husband has been sick since last Thursday and is still horribly congested. I spent Monday and Tuesday with a fever and a sore throat. The doc told me it was viral so he couldn’t give me anything for it. Thanks, Doc. The congestion started for me on Tuesday night, and today I can barely talk, my voice just crackles in an out. The sore throat is back as well due to all the coughing and such. Luckily my boss has been letting me work from home but we’re having new windows put in the house today so that should be a freaking blast. Hoping some others come along with good tips on how to get rid of this stuff as well. Hope you feel better soon Jane!

Ugh, that sore throat thing is tough. I just got over that myself. The hot tea (Raspberry Zinger for me) with honey and lemon worked alright for me, in conjunction with cough drops… the cough drops were a sneak for me though, because my doc only wanted me to have sucrets, which I think are disgusting. Tylenol, water, and lots of rest is about all I can offer in the way of recovery. Good luck! I know it sucks! (Of course, now my poor husband has it too and I’m just hoping I don’t get it back!)

Sounds more like allergies than a cold really. The throat could just be a bi-product of the sinus drainage. Try taking Zyrtec or Claritin (pg safe, just not the “D”). For the throat- do you sleep with your bedroom super cold? Sometimes my throat is scratchy if I sleep too cold. Otherwise, maybe try a salt water gargle and just plain wait it out. That’s one of the drawbacks of being pg– no good meds!

There’s a tea called “throat coat” you can usually find it at any kind of organic store or section. It’s FANTASTIC for a sore throat, that and/or a big spoonful of honey and lemon juice, for temporary relief. Good luck!

I’m in week 23 and feeling the same pain. Allergies are in full swing where I live, and with many of the same symptoms. I would try the Claritin or Zyrtec for a few days, and maybe ask your doctor about a nasal spray (Flonase works for me). Or just try some regular saline spray to help keep things from getting too stuffed up. And plenty of fluids and rest of course!

When I used to sing a lot and I’d get sore throats, I would make myself some tea by taking ginger root and slicing it thinly then simmering it in water. Once it had simmered for a couple minutes, I’d remove the ginger and add lemon juice and honey. You can also try soft ginger candies- they’re amazing at soothing your throat and clearing out minor congestion!
