Registering for baby shower tomorrow! Need help!!Tarzan and I are biting the bullet and registering tomorrow.  Yesterday and today I’ve been doing my research online in hopes that I will know what I want to scan when I get to the store.  I hope that it will prepare me since I’ve spent so much time looking at baby stuff.

I would like your recommendation on certain products and your opinion on what is truly needed.

(The Babies R Us “must-haves” registry checklist is quite long and I’m convinced that all of this stuff is not a “must-have”.)  Links are awesome too, if you don’t mind.

Car seats:

1.  What brand do you prefer?  Why?

2.  Would you recommend registering for 2 car seats or just a car seat base for the 2nd car?

Strollers:

1.  Did you opt for a travel system?  Why or why not?  (I’ve heard that they can be extremely heavy and bulky.  Do you find this true?)

2.  Do we really need a mid-size stroller, full-size stroller, jogger stroller, and a lightweight stroller?  If we do need more than one, can you tell me why it would come in handy please.

3.  What do I need to look for in a stroller?  Is it really imperative to have a drink holder, for example?  What little perks did you find that you couldn’t live without?

4.  Is there a brand that you loved and would suggest?

Backpacks & Carriers:

1.  By backpack do they mean a diaper bag?  If so, did you get one for yourself and another one for your husband?  Or did you share a neutral colored one?

2.  Do I need a sling and a more sturdy carrier?  Why?  What brands do you recommend and why?

Activity:

1.  Do I need a bouncer, walker, swing, and door jumpers?  What brands did your baby like best?  Are there certain things that I need to look out for?

Diapers & Formula:

1.  Do I really need something like the diaper genie?  A few people have told me that it’s more of a pain than anything.  Is there something better?  Or should I just throw it away in the garbage in the garage the old-fashioned way?

2.  Should I register for formula even though I’m planning on breastfeeding?

Safety:

1.  What brand do you like for audio monitors?

2.  What about video monitors?

Nursery:

1.  Do you recommend a cradle, bassinet, or a portable crib in addition to the “real” crib that will be in his nursery?  I’ve heard that a pack and play works well for this beginning time.  Would you agree?

2.  Glider or rocker?

I know this is really long, but I appreciate any words of wisdom that you can pass along to me.  Plus, you never know who else this will help!  Thank you so much!!

Car seats:

1. What brand do you prefer? Why?
GRACO SNUGRIDE- rated safest. safety is #1 priority.
2. Would you recommend registering for 2 car seats or just a car seat base for the 2nd car?
Get 1 with 2 bases.
Strollers:

1. Did you opt for a travel system? Why or why not? (I’ve heard that they can be extremely heavy and bulky. Do you find this true?)
I went for lightweight. travel systems are great but you can get the snap n go for infant and then when ure kid is 5 months or so and sitting, you’ll switch to a real stroller.
2. Do we really need a mid-size stroller, full-size stroller, jogger stroller, and a lightweight stroller? If we do need more than one, can you tell me why it would come in handy please.
no need to buy a ton… just the snap n go base and then whichever main stroller u like. buy umbrella strollers for $12 at toys r us once your kid is over age 1 and ure running out quickly. remember whatever strollers you own, you have to store and put in and out of the trunk!
3. What do I need to look for in a stroller? Is it really imperative to have a drink holder, for example? What little perks did you find that you couldn’t live without?
i loved cup holder and snack tray for kids- once the kid is 8+ months he/she will want cheerios and a bottle in front. so convenient to serve and leave there!
Activity:

1. Do I need a bouncer, walker, swing, and door jumpers? What brands did your baby like best? Are there certain things that I need to look out for?
only a bouncer- my kids spent their first 5 months of life in that. get one w toys and a vibrating option- lights and sounds too. walkers and door jumpers considered unsafe and bad by Dr’s nowadays. A swing is good but not needed if you have a bouncer and at 9+ months an exersaucer is great!
Diapers & Formula:

1. Do I really need something like the diaper genie? A few people have told me that it’s more of a pain than anything. Is there something better? Or should I just throw it away in the garbage in the garage the old-fashioned way?
if you are ok with taking out garbage and sometimes using air freshener, a reg covered pail will do and will save you money. either way is ok.
2. Should I register for formula even though I’m planning on breastfeeding? No need. you never know what formula ure kid will need at the time- soy or reg, etc. and buy it at costco or BJs in bulk.
Nursery:

1. Do you recommend a cradle, bassinet, or a portable crib in addition to the “real” crib that will be in his nursery? I’ve heard that a pack and play works well for this beginning time. Would you agree?
pack n plays come with bassinets either built in or separate. i reccomend the combi pack n play cuz the bassinet comes w a separate base. you can use that for first few weeks then go to srib. and when you travel, you still have the full pack n play.
2. Glider or rocker?
one of them is good or a bed where u can nurse in the middle of the night. just make ureself a comfy setup and enjoy!
GOOD LUCK!
feel free to tweet with any more comments or Q’s. hope i helped!

Car seats:

1. What brand do you prefer? Why?
britax – safe and reliable. we actually own 6 of this brand for our 2 kids. 2 for each of our cars and 2 for my moms
2. Would you recommend registering for 2 car seats or just a car seat base for the 2nd car?
you will need 2 car seats – one for the infant stage. this is the one with the base and carrier. register for this ONE car seat and the extra base. there is no point to having two of these carrier/car seats – and while you are at it yes do the travel system. never wake a sleeping baby – the baby will be comfy and will fall asleep in the car and you won’t want to wake him (right?) to move him. this way you can just put the carrier into the stroller and carry on with whatever you are doing or you can put the carrier in a grocery cart (it actually clicks right in) or carry it into a restaurant and keep the baby in it while you try to enjoy a meal with your spouse. most restaurants have slings and if they don’t the wooden high chairs flip over and hold baby carriers

the second car seat you will need when the baby is too heavy for the carrier – i suggest any of the britax convertible car seats. they go backwards till the baby is 1. then you turn it around and he will be in it for the rest of his life…right?

Strollers:

1. Did you opt for a travel system? Why or why not? (I’ve heard that they can be extremely heavy and bulky. Do you find this true?)
see above. also we flew with ours – it was awesome to roll my son up to the door of the plane, pop out the carrier and hand off the stroller. graco makes a decent one if you can’t find the britax one…it can be elusive

2. Do we really need a mid-size stroller, full-size stroller, jogger stroller, and a lightweight stroller? If we do need more than one, can you tell me why it would come in handy please.

all we found we needed was the stroller that came with the travel system and the jogging stroller. you only need a jogger if you run on trails or on bumpy pavement. i run so i needed it and we actually have two one is a manhatten (i think) and the other is a phil and teds – double stroller and it’s hilarious and awesome!

3. What do I need to look for in a stroller? Is it really imperative to have a drink holder, for example? What little perks did you find that you couldn’t live without?

the only think i couldn’t live without in regard to strollers was a place to put my purse and baby bag. the stroller HAS to have a spot underneath the seat for this, otherwise every time you bend over the bags on your shoulder will come off and everything will spill out – no lie and it’s annoying.

4. Is there a brand that you loved and would suggest?
see above

Backpacks & Carriers:

1. By backpack do they mean a diaper bag? If so, did you get one for yourself and another one for your husband? Or did you share a neutral colored one?
keep one baby bag with everything in it at all times. the bag goes with the baby – the baby doesn’t go with the bag – ya know? you only need one. and truthfully, is your husband ever going to take the baby anywhere without you for an extended period of time?

2. Do I need a sling and a more sturdy carrier? Why? What brands do you recommend and why?
i couldn’t get the hang of the sling. my husband used the baby bjorn and loved it but i hurt my back while pregnant and couldn’t use it afterwards

Activity:

1. Do I need a bouncer, walker, swing, and door jumpers? What brands did your baby like best? Are there certain things that I need to look out for?

you do need a swing. it will soothe even the most colicy, acid refluxy baby. most of them will swing both sideways and forward and back and have cool mobiles. we also had the activity center thingy (the round ones with all the toys on top) whatever those are called. didn’t get a door jumper but had the free standing ones. they were great for getting out energy and helping strengthen legs that weren’t quite ready to walk.

Diapers & Formula:

1. Do I really need something like the diaper genie? A few people have told me that it’s more of a pain than anything. Is there something better? Or should I just throw it away in the garbage in the garage the old-fashioned way?

you can get disposable diaper bags (like the ones for dog poop) and wrap up any stinkers and put them in your regular trash. we tried the diaper champ and it was a pain

2. Should I register for formula even though I’m planning on breastfeeding?
you will want to have one small container of formula when you get home from the hospital. sometimes either your milk hasn’t come in by the time you head home or the baby is not getting enough b/c you are both still learning and it leads to a hungry and angry baby. 1/2 ounce or so of formula will soothe the baby and it’s not enough to ruin the breastfeeding thing or to get them “used” to the bottle. but it will enable a first time mommy not to freak out the first night at home

Safety:

1. What brand do you like for audio monitors?
summer audio/video monitor is the way to go. hand held tv monitor that is just PERFECT. so strong i can hear the baby breathing.

2. What about video monitors?
see above – i would just go for the summer – after a while of being on the screen goes dark and you just hear whatever is going on
Nursery:

1. Do you recommend a cradle, bassinet, or a portable crib in addition to the “real” crib that will be in his nursery? I’ve heard that a pack and play works well for this beginning time. Would you agree?
pack and play all the way

2. Glider or rocker?
glider
I know this is really long, but I appreciate any words of wisdom that you can pass along to me. Plus, you never know who else this will help! Thank you so much!!

Oh my goodness, we’re facing some of the same dilemmas, especially with the car seats and strollers (and whether we should go with a travel system). Plus, it seems like everyone has a different opinion, which is mind boggling. I think we’ve figured out some things…when I have more time I’ll respond with more details.

I agree that some of those “must haves” are not must haves at all. I hate buying things just for the sake of buying things. We looked at that list and crossed off about half of the stuff that just seemed frivolous and stupid. I’m registering for a lot of the stuff that helps me stick to my values–organic bedding and clothes, recycled materials, natural baby products (shampoo, lotion, diaper cream, sunscreen) like Bert’s Bees, Method baby laundry detergent (no phosphates, not tested on animals), cloth diapers (like Bum Genius) and semi-disposable diapers (gDiapers). A lot of these products are on our Target registry.

Thanks!!

I’m a little confused… Is the travel system for car seats or for strollers?

Is the Britax convertible car seat and the Graco snugride for newborns? Looking online it says that both are best for infants and toddlers, not newborns. If they aren’t good for newborns, what would y’all recommend?

Thanks a million! You both gave some really great advice and I’m taking notes like crazy! ;)

Jane,
Thanks for this post! I’m in the same place as you as a first time mom. I haven’t registered yet and I’m a little overwhelmed by the whole thing! I can tell you that my friends that are moms have advised me that cup holders are a must for a stroller (one of my friends got a stroller that didn’t have cup holders and actually went and bought attachable cup holders after the fact). I’ve also heard the pack in play is the best option for the first few months, so I think I’ll be going that route.

Thanks to Estee, Rosemary and Kelly for all the wonderful information!!

First of all, I say hit yard sales and consignment shops. It’s amazing what you can find.

You do have a long list, so here are my must haves after 2 kids:

-2 diaper bags. 1 large one for the stage where you need everything and the kitchen sink, then a smaller one for when they’re a toddler and all you need is a couple diapers, some wipes and a sippy.
-pack and play with bassinet insert. I set mine up downstairs so I didnt’ have to walk up and down the stairs all day and also used the bassinet as a changing table when the baby was awake.
-both my boys HATED a swing. They both LOVED a stationary activity center (I think that’s what they’re called now). My 2nd liked his bouncy seat as well. It had a vibration feature that allowed me to keep him happy long enough to grab a fast shower.
-2 strollers. 1 large one with a good sized basket underneath for shopping at the mall and good sized wheels for off roading if you like to go to carnivals in the summer. We have a combi or a chicco that I love. I can never remember the brand because they look the same. An umbrella stroller is nice for quick trips and stores you know have small spaces. Also for the doctor’s office. Don’t buy one. You can usually get a free umbrella stroller free with a $75 purchase from Toys R Us or Babies R Us if you watch for the special. I still get the free stroller when I have qualifying purchases and give them to friends.
-1 infant car seat, 2 bases. It’s way easier and cheaper. You may even want to register for a convertible seat because depending on how fast your baby grows they may be out of the infant seat by 6 months.
-a white noise machine. My son has one that is also an alarm clock and plays nature noises. It doesn’t have to be anythign fancy, but it’ll help block out other household noises while they sleep
-humidifier for when the baby is congested
-diapers (but not newborn size. Your child will probably only fit in them for a couple weeks)
-swaddling blankets. My favorite are Kiddopatomus (sp?) with the velcro.
-cloth diapers for burp cloths
-wash cloths and hooded towels
-at least 2 crib mattress protectors
-at least 4 crib sheets
-at least 3 changing pad covers
-LOTS of onesies in various sizes
-whatever rocking chair you can get out of the easiest pretending to hold a baby w/ottoman
-we have the fisher price lights and sounds monitor that has lasted 5 years and through 2 kids now.
-a regular garbage can works fine. You may want one with a lid when the baby starts solids. Breastfeeding diapers don’t generally smell.
-boogie wipes

I’m sure there’s more handy dandy things I’ve acquired, but this is a good list.

A travel system just means a stroller that can accommodate the car seat on top so you have matching items. these are good if you don’t mind having an entire stroller under the car seat for the first 6 months or so till the baby wants to look around. the car seat straps/clicks onto the stroller facing you- like the model featured here: http://www.gracobaby.com/Catalog/Pages/LandingPage.aspx?N=400%2010417&catid=10:400||1
britax convertable car seats are not for newborns- they start at about 22 lbs., when the baby outgrows the graco snugride carseat. they are rear and forward facing after the infant graco carseat.

Car seats:
1. We used a Peg Perego with Adia and will be using the same car seat again. We’ll also have a Graco Safeseat. I recommend trying several out in store and it’s even better if you can find out what fits best in your car. Some seats are insanely hard to install in some cars. The Peg Perego clips right into the Subarau, no problems, but it’s harder to get it adjusted just right in the van.
2. 1 seat, 2 bases is easiest.

Strollers:
1. No travel system. The car seat never left the car unless it was moving cars. We always carried Adia or used a front pack.
2. We have an umbrella stroller (Maclaren) and a jogger. Joggers are great for jogging, but are awful in malls, stores, etc. because they’re so wide. The Maclaren is awesome. Light, folds easily, fairly small, but rarely gets used. Adia doesn’t like strollers and actually prefers my mom’s simple $20 Walmart umbrella stroller.
3. How small is folds, weight. Does it fold easily and unfold just as easily? Cup holders aren’t necessary, but can be nice when kids get older.
4. I do love my Maclaren. They’re expensive, but nice.

Backpacks and Carriers:
1. They mean hiking backpacks for kiddos to sit in. They ride on your back. Only good for older babies and toddlers. We’re actually looking at a Kelty one for Adia to ride in.
2. Are you planning on wearing your baby a lot? I can still wear Adia and it’s especially nice if she’s sleeping. I started with a Baby Bijorn, but if you’re really serious about baby wearing, I’d recommend a Kozy or the Ergo. I’ve heard rave reviews about Ergos and they can be used to carry newborns (with the insert) up to toddler. I have a Kozy Carrier which I love.

Activity:
1. We had a swing, Adia hated it, but most babies love them. We couldn’t live without the jumperoo. We had the Fisher Price rainforest one and plan to use it for the twins too. Adia used that from 3 months until almost a year. In the beginning she couldn’t even touch the ground, we had to put a box under her. Bouncy seats are nice too. You can set them in one and take a shower.

Diapers & Formula:
1. We never had a diaper genie. Never saw the point. Just put the poopies in a plastic bag, tie it and take them to the outside trash. If you’re exclusively breastfeeding in the beginning, they won’t smell that bad anyway. We’re actually planning on cloth diapering from about 2 months on this time. We did it briefly with Adia.
2. I didn’t have luck breastfeeding Adia and we didn’t have any formula and bottles. I would recommend not having any in the house to begin with either. Breastfeeding is tough in the beginning and having bottles and formula in the house may make you more inclined to give up.

Safety – We didn’t have any monitors and we still don’t. Adia coslept for the first 2 years, so we didn’t exactly need them.

Nursery -
1. We had a Arms Reach Cosleeper along with a crib. Adia never used the crib and barely used the cosleeper. She ended up sleeping with me instead. This time around we bought a pack n play with the bassinet. I can’t imagine trying to cosleep with twins.
2. Rocker sucked, glider was ok. I actually never used it much. I just put Adia in the front pack, but the grandmas always liked the glider. We still have it too. Just make sure it’s padded. My niece ended up in the emergency room because she hit her head on the ottoman and split herself open.

Most of all, don’t buy a bunch of stuff. You probably won’t end up using half of it.

9 Casey 05.03.09 at 2:59 pm

Carseat – Infant I’d go with Chicco or Peg Perego. Convertible I’d go with Britax or Combi. For the infant I’d get 2 bases one seat.

Strollers – Travel systems are too heavy and bulky most kids grow out of them fast. Studys prove childs have less seperation anxiety if they used a stroller where they face the parent. My suggestion is UPPAbaby VISTA (but I’m biased, LOL). Benefits are its lightweight, high child weight limits, has many options, adapters it with Chicco, Peg Perego or Graco infant seats, will grow with your family with additional accessories. You can add up to 2 cupholders that are easily removable.

Diaper Bags – go with what you like. My hubby and I both personally like Diaper Dudes which is why we stock them. Get one with lots and lots of pockets … putting things in separate pockets will prevent that dreaded I’m in a hurry and can’t find the pacifer in the bottom of this bag scenario.

Slings – I love the ring sling hubby does not. It takes practice … get one that comes with a video.

Formula – don’t register for it. Baby might not like the kind you buy or doc may recommend another kind for any # of reasons.

Nursery – Pack n Play’s are perfect. “Test Drive” rockers and gliders and pick the most comfortable for you … imagine rocking a baby not just sitting in it empty handed. For a monitor I’d recommend the Angel Care systems.

Finally but not least you might consider using MyRegistry.com instead of Babies R Us. You can pick items from any local or online retailer and add to your registry so your not limited to just one store. You can even write comments for each item like coupon codes or when sales end, if there is free shipping, etc. It’s amazing. My store offers a completion discount on items listed on MyRegistry from our site.

Car seats:
We loved our Graco infant car seat. Would totally buy it again. We had an extra base for my husband’s car and it was also very useful. Highly recommend. Once the baby outgrows the infant car seat I HIGHLY recommend getting a Britax convertible car seat. We have a Marathon for each child and love them. I was in a car accident when my daughter was not quite one and was so thankful to have the best car seat to keep her safe. I would buy another one in a heart beat. Plus they are ultra soft and wash great. I know because I’ve had to clean up puke from both of ours. Trust me, you will too.

Strollers:
Do NOT buy a travel system. You’ll only use it as long as you use the infant car seat and it will be a waste of money. Plus they’re super heavy. Get one of those cheaper Snap n Go type strollers that you snap the infant car seat in. That’s basically all you’ll use the travel system for anyways.

Take my advice and don’t buy a main stroller until you really need one (when your son outgrows his infant car seat and you stop using the Snap n Go). At that point take your baby with you to the store and try out a variety of light weight strollers and see which one you like then. It’s too hard to know what you want in a stroller until after you’ve spent a few months using one! By that point you should know where you use a stroller and how much use it will get. Mine doesn’t get a lot of use and I don’t find a big basket necessary. Nor is a drink holder because I use water bottles that don’t fit in them anyways.

I own an Inglesina Trip and really like it. I traded my Zooper for it because I (actually my daughter) didn’t care for the bumper bar. Not sure if you’d need a jogging stroller unless you’re into jogging. I can’t imagine trying to maneuver one of those in stores!

Backpacks & Carriers:

1. By backpack do they mean a diaper bag? If so, did you get one for yourself and another one for your husband? Or did you share a neutral colored one?

No they mean the baby carriers that go on your back and we do have one but it’s not a necessity. My husband has used it a few times to carry one of the kids while he mows the lawn. That’s about it.

As for a diaper bag I have a Fluerville Sling Tote and I highly recommend it. I LOVE it! I originally had a messenger style bag and hated the flap. I need to be able to dig in to my bag and grab whatever I need without a flap in the way. I like that I have a pocket that is dedicated to my stuff (wallet, check book, chap stick, cell phone…) since it’s my purse too. My husband never carries it but is rarely out with the kids without me. When he is I throw a diaper or two with the travel wipes container and a snack & sippy cup in another bag that he throws in the car. Not a big deal.

2. Do I need a sling and a more sturdy carrier? Why? What brands do you recommend and why?

YES!!! A sling is one of my Must Have Baby items. I had a microfleece Peanut Shell pouch that I loved for the newborn phase. It’s easy to learn how to use and stretchy enough to mold to baby perfectly. A perfect beginners sling. Once baby is no longer a newborn and not content to be snug as a bug in a pouch I would recommend looking into a ring sling (little more complicated but adjustable and can be worn by both you and your husband since it’s not fitted) or mei tai. I love the mei tai for wearing an older baby on my back. It makes life easy when your baby wants to be held but dinner needs to be made and laundry done. I still use my mei tai with my 18 month old.

If you’re willing to do some homework you might look into buying a wrap. It will cover all the babywearing phases and is super comfortable. I loved mine, especially with a small baby. The reason I sold mine is because I found I was using my mei tai more often as it’s quicker to put on for a back carry for me and that’s the only way I’m wearing my 18 month old these days.

Activity:

1. Do I need a bouncer, walker, swing, and door jumpers? What brands did your baby like best? Are there certain things that I need to look out for?

All babies are different. My daughter lived in her vibrating bouncer and was a life saver as she wouldn’t sleep anywhere else for a few months. We used it so much the vibrating function gave out and the frame was bent but we still used it with our son. No need for the walker, we had a travel swing because it was smaller but could have done without. I know other people who swear by them though. Never had a door jumper, too worried it would rip off our molding!

Diapers & Formula:

1. Do I really need something like the diaper genie? A few people have told me that it’s more of a pain than anything. Is there something better? Or should I just throw it away in the garbage in the garage the old-fashioned way?

We have a Diaper Champ and have used it for 3.5 years. It works fine and uses regular garbage bags so it’s not cost prohibitive. It doesn’t completely contain the smell but does a better job then a regular trashcan. I’d probably buy it again.

2. Should I register for formula even though I’m planning on breastfeeding?

No! Breastfeeding can be challenging and having formula on hand would make it too easy to give up on it.

Safety:

1. What brand do you like for audio monitors?

We borrowed one and found it annoying. We got more static then anything else (Baby’s First brand I think?). Our kids’ room is really close to ours so I always hear them when they wake up in the middle of the night. My kids share a room and my daughter (and husband!) would sleep through my son crying but I would hear him. I think Moms have some sort of sixth sense for that sort of thing.

2. What about video monitors?

Again, we never used one or found it necessary.

Nursery:

1. Do you recommend a cradle, bassinet, or a portable crib in addition to the “real” crib that will be in his nursery? I’ve heard that a pack and play works well for this beginning time. Would you agree?

Honestly, I would just use a pack n play in your room for the the first few weeks. It works just fine. We used ours for our son the first few months because we didn’t have the cradle back yet and didn’t even miss it.

2. Glider or rocker?

Whichever you find most comfortable. I had a rocking chair and still love it :)

12 mamaseoul 05.03.09 at 3:52 pm

First of all, go buy Baby Bargains by Denise & Alan Fields or order a downloadable version online:
http://www.windsorpeak.com/babybargains/default.html
They go through all categories of baby gear and give an overview of available features, tips on how to choose products that are right for you and then give individual reviews of all major brands available in the US in both big box stores like BRU and online. They also have charts that allow you to compare features side by side. this book is definitely worth it. I walked out of BRU three times b/c I was completely overwhelmed before I got this book.

Now, as to what you need. Different things work for different parents and babies because your lifestyle and the baby’s personality are key factors in determining what works. Don’t buy or register for things like a highchair or even strollers before you need them because you will figure out what you need as your baby grows and you will make smarter purchases that way.

Car seats:

1. What brand do you prefer? Why? Graco Snugride for infants and Britax for after they outgrow the infant seat. Graco is lightweight and always rated high for safety. I use a baby carrier like a Mamma’s Milk Pouch sling, Beco or Ergo most of the time b/c the carseat carrier is heavy, but sometimes it is nice to have them sit in it for short periods while you are doing something and you don’t want to be lugging around extra weight. You could also just buy a convertible carseat from the start and skip the infant carseat. That is just a personal preference. Britax has lots of safety features and very easy adjustments. you turn a knob instead of rethreading the straps. Very nice.

2. Would you recommend registering for 2 car seats or just a car seat base for the 2nd car?

If you go with the infant carseat then register for 1 seat and 2 bases. If you go with a convertible, register for two seats.

Strollers:

1. Did you opt for a travel system? Why or why not? (I’ve heard that they can be extremely heavy and bulky. Do you find this true?) I did not use a travel system. They are extremely heavy and bulky and it is much easier to put the baby on your body in a carrier like a sling or Beco than push that travel system. Why? Well, if you are getting groceries, how will you push the cart? If you are walking for exercise, there are better strollers with smoother rides. Skip it and save your money for something better.

2. Do we really need a mid-size stroller, full-size stroller, jogger stroller, and a lightweight stroller? If we do need more than one, can you tell me why it would come in handy please.

You will probably need more than one stroller, but as to which stroller you need depends on your uses and lifesyle. If you don’t jog or won’t likely jog with the baby, you don’t need a jogging stroller (there are urban strollers which have the handling of a jogger but have smaller wheels so they take up less space and they are an interesting option). In the beginning, you really don’t need a stroller, just a carrier. By the time you need a stroller, you will figure out what is really important to you and make a better decision. That Baby Bargains book is worth the purchase for the section on strollers alone!

3. What do I need to look for in a stroller? Is it really imperative to have a drink holder, for example? What little perks did you find that you couldn’t live without?

Baby Bargains book covers this in detail. If you have the opportunity to push it in person, do it. Make sure the handle bars are tall enough and that you don’t kick the wheels when you walk. Cup holders are nice, but you can buy a cup holder and attach it if it doesn’t have one. Easy fold.

4. Is there a brand that you loved and would suggest?
MacLaren Volo is the entry level MacLaren umbrella stroller. It is very small and lightweight, but still has a sun shade and small basket and locks when closed. This is great for toddlers. The handling is much smoother than the $20 umbrella strollers.

I didn’t use my stroller until my son was 18 months old. The carrier was easier. The Baby Bargains book says that you will probably need more than one stroller but I ignored that and tried to buy one stroller that fit all my needs. I bought the Inglesina Zippy and then I didn’t use it much at all until my son was 18 months old. Now, I live in Seoul and a more rugged urban stroller would have been a better purchase or a more lightweight umbrella stroller like the Volo (which I now have). I wish I would have waited to buy my stroller.
Backpacks & Carriers:

1. By backpack do they mean a diaper bag? If so, did you get one for yourself and another one for your husband? Or did you share a neutral colored one?

They mean back pack carrier. For newborns I like the Beco Butterfly (worth every penny) or Mamma’s Milk adjustable pouch sling. The Ergo is like the Beco, but you need an additional infant insert. The Beco is lighter, thinner and prettier. Skip the Bjorn, but Beco and Ergo are much better. For a full review:
http://cairomama.blogspot.com/2007/02/baby-carriers-revisited.html

For diaper bags, I bought things that I liked and were not gender neutral because I had the diaper bag almost all the time. I love Baby Kaed. they have the best organization, I have seen. I also like the JJ Cole Diaper and Wipes Pod for lightweight travel (leave the big diaper bag in the car and take the pod in with you. if you need more, go back out to the car).

2. Do I need a sling and a more sturdy carrier? Why? What brands do you recommend and why?

A lot of this is personal preference. I like soft structured carriers like the Beco Butterfly or Ergo because they are versatile (you can wear baby or front, back or side–though side isn’t that convenient with those) and easy to get in and out of. Because I have an older model Beco that requires an infant insert like the Ergo does, I am using a Mamma’s Milk adjustable pouch for my newborn because it is easier to get her in and out and smaller to carry than the B or E with infant insert. If I had the newer Beco Butterfly, I would probably just use that. In general, I prefer a two shoulder carrier.

Activity:

1. Do I need a bouncer, walker, swing, and door jumpers? What brands did your baby like best? Are there certain things that I need to look out for?

Don’t buy the walker and door jumper right now. You may or may not need them. I didn’t use either. I would start with a bouncer or a swing. I didn’t use a bouncer, but many people do. I just used a swing. Most (but not all) babies like swings .

Diapers & Formula:

1. Do I really need something like the diaper genie? A few people have told me that it’s more of a pain than anything. Is there something better? Or should I just throw it away in the garbage in the garage the old-fashioned way?

You don’t need a diaper genie. Just a lidded trash can and take out the trash. I had the Diaper Champ (takes a regular kitchen trash bag) and it worked fine, but then I switched to cloth and just put the dirties in a laundry basket in the laundry room.

Don’t buy or register for newborn diapers. You’ll get some at the hospital and then buy as needed. Your baby won’t be in them for long so you risk your baby outgrowing before you can use them. Same goes for newborn clothing, don’t buy too much. 0-3 months is a better size to buy, but even that will be outgrown quickly. Buy mostly 0-3 and one or two newborn outfits. If baby is small and you want more, it is easy to pick them up. Don’t buy any clothing or blankets until after your showers because you will likely get a lot of both.

2. Should I register for formula even though I’m planning on breastfeeding?
No. You’ll get free formula in the mail just by registering at BRU and Target.

Safety:

1. What brand do you like for audio monitors?
I bought a monitor and never used it, even in a two-story house, I could always hear my babies, plus, I ended up co-sleeping so I really didn’t need one. In any case, it is best for baby to at least be in your room during the first few months because it makes night feeding easier. If you are breastfeeding, try co-sleeping and you’ll get much more sleep b/c you won’t really have to wake up to feed.
2. What about video monitors?

Nursery:

1. Do you recommend a cradle, bassinet, or a portable crib in addition to the “real” crib that will be in his nursery? I’ve heard that a pack and play works well for this beginning time. Would you agree? Arms Reach Co-sleeper is great, but I just had the baby in bed with me. I bought a regular crib and didn’t use it until my son was 20 months old because co-sleeping was easier/better. At that point, he could have gone into a toddler bed or regular twin mattress on the floor. I used a Pack ‘N Play as a downstairs changing table, and toy storage, but you could also use it as a bassinet.

2. Glider or rocker?
I didn’t have either. I nursed in bed at night and would never have used a glider or rocker because I didn’t sit in the bedroom during the day. My advice is to wait on that and get it if you need it.

Good luck! You need a lot less than you think to get started! Check out zodee.com for nursing bras. Womama and Hot Milk are pretty and supportive. I like Womama better than Hot Milk for the first few months. They are New Zealand brands, and Zodee is an Aussie website, but has reasonable shipping cost to the US.

Every baby is different, so take all this with a grain of salt. Keep your registry to ‘must haves’ and you can fill in the rest later (we have picked up some great deals from Craigslist).

Car seats:
1 infant carseat w/2 bases (Graco Snugride has worked great for us) and then you will probably want 2 convertible carseats. Britax is the popular brand, but some of that will depend on the size of your little one (if you can hoard some gifts cards and wait to buy the convertibles seats, you can wait to buy this)

Strollers:
Travel system is not necessary, and the strollers tend to be lower quality (in my opinion). A ’snap and go’ system is AWESOME when baby is in the infant carrier–lightweight and easy access to the basket underneath. After that, it depends on you and your activities. We have an umbrella stroller that stays in the car and doesn’t take up much space, plus a deluxe Peg Perego (used from Craigslist) that is good for long adventures and can accommodate a sleeping baby/toddler (great for trips that have us out and about during naptime or after bedtime). A snack tray for the little one is very useful, but that’s about the only necessity I’ve had.

Backpacks & Carriers:

We have a Baby Bjorn and a sling…this will probably depend on the preferences of the little one and what you’re comfortable with. The sling was tricky to get used to, but my younger son loved it.

Activity:

The bouncy seat was a must-have in our house, especially if you don’t want to let baby out of your sight for those first few weeks, but clearly cannot hold a child while showering and going to the bathroom ;-) One that vibrates and plays music is worthwhile. The bouncer (kind of a stationary walker) was great to have later down the road (5-6 months). It does not need to be fancy…we have one with piano keys under the feet, and another that is the most basic exersaucer you will ever find, and both were equally loved.

Diapers & Formula:

We have the diaper champ, which is slightly better than a trash can, but I don’t think the diaper genie would be much better (or worth the cost). I agree with double-bagging the stinky diapers, especially because you will not want to run outside every time you need to throw one away!

Don’t register for formula. Your doctor/hospital will give you enough free samples to figure out what you need (if you need it). If you do need to go the formula route, always try store brand first!

Safety:

Never had a video monitor (2 kids, 3rd on the way), and I don’t think we’ve been missing anything. We have gone through several audio monitors, with no great success/failure, so I don’t have much to suggest here. Except get one that recharges–makes life much easier!

Nursery:

Pack and Play is great to have…an alternative to a separate bassinet is a ‘moses basket.’ Then if you go to friend/family’s house, you have a safe comfy place to put the baby down without dragging your entire nursery along :-)

I have had a glider since baby #1 and LOVE IT. The seat reclines, the ottoman glides…it’s practically a bed when you need it to be. If I can find the brand name/website, I will repost, because it is the greatest!!

Good luck!

Car seats:

1. What brand do you prefer? Why? We got a convertible just for the longevity of it. We also were given an infant seat and I admit it did come in handy at time.

2. Would you recommend registering for 2 car seats or just a car seat base for the 2nd car? Just a second base

Strollers:

1. Did you opt for a travel system? Why or why not? (I’ve heard that they can be extremely heavy and bulky. Do you find this true?) we didn’t get a travel system instead we got a one size fits all stroller (lightweight Chicco from BRU).

2. Do we really need a mid-size stroller, full-size stroller, jogger stroller, and a lightweight stroller? If we do need more than one, can you tell me why it would come in handy please. I would say no.

3. What do I need to look for in a stroller? Is it really imperative to have a drink holder, for example? What little perks did you find that you couldn’t live without?
I just wanted somehting that was light weight and easy to move between cars and rugged for many surfaces and this one is.

4. Is there a brand that you loved and would suggest? Chicco. lightweight and somewhat inexpensive

Backpacks & Carriers:

1. By backpack do they mean a diaper bag? If so, did you get one for yourself and another one for your husband? Or did you share a neutral colored one? I got a backpack diaper bag that worked great

2. Do I need a sling and a more sturdy carrier? Why? What brands do you recommend and why? If you get a ring sling its will last you for a while. I can still use it with my 35lb toddler if that tells you anything plus you can nurse in it. You can also get the other kind of carrier I’ve used called a mei tai and you can wear it on your hip, front, or back. Its also more of something you could both use very easily.

Activity:

1. Do I need a bouncer, walker, swing, and door jumpers? What brands did your baby like best? Are there certain things that I need to look out for? We got a swing and ranforst jumperoo and it worked great. Just get something that looks sturdy for the jumper and the swing something that takes batteries and can use an outlet.

Diapers & Formula:

1. Do I really need something like the diaper genie? A few people have told me that it’s more of a pain than anything. Is there something better? Or should I just throw it away in the garbage in the garage the old-fashioned way? We just got a cheap target step diaper pail and changed out the walmart, target or publix bags every day or when ever it got full.

2. Should I register for formula even though I’m planning on breastfeeding? I would say no on this. The hospital will probably give you a sample anyway. I did have bottles because I would be returning to work. I agree with one of the previous comments that the first few weeks are tough but it was so very worth it in the end. I nursed him for 14 months and it was very worth it.

Safety:

1. What brand do you like for audio monitors? We didn’t use one.

2. What about video monitors?

Nursery:

1. Do you recommend a cradle, bassinet, or a portable crib in addition to the “real” crib that will be in his nursery? I’ve heard that a pack and play works well for this beginning time. Would you agree? We got a conertable crib and never used a play pen. For our next one we are planning on getting a pack and play just so we can keep this one close by the bed and make night time nursing a little easier.

I know if you’re registering tomorrow, you may not want to dive into a book. But if you haven’t read Baby Bargains, I HIGHLY recommend it. They have ratings for basically everything, and they tell you what products are a waste of money and where to not cut corners. It’s a great book, and my husband and I felt like we really were well informed when we registered.

16 Connie 05.03.09 at 9:09 pm

Car seats:

1. What brand do you prefer? Why?

I am reading reviews online and combining that with consumer reports ratings for safety.

2. Would you recommend registering for 2 car seats or just a car seat base for the 2nd car?

I would do one car seat and two bases, If you want to register for two then make one a carrier and the other a convertible which you will need faster than you thought.

Strollers:

1. Did you opt for a travel system? Why or why not? (I’ve heard that they can be extremely heavy and bulky. Do you find this true?)

I think this depends on how much time you plan on spending outside of the house walking or shopping (not grocery shopping) I have looked at my life and when I would use or need a stroller and have determined that I would only use it a few times. Not enough to bother with storage of something big or spending that kind of money. I would opt for an umbrella stroller that can be used past toddler times to get the most out of my money.

2. Do we really need a mid-size stroller, full-size stroller, jogger stroller, and a lightweight stroller? If we do need more than one, can you tell me why it would come in handy please.

I don’t see a need for so many strollers. A jogger is good if you are an active jogger or walker and want the ease of taking baby with you. If not then don’t waste your money. Again, the size of stroller will depend on how you will use it and how often. Do you want to just carry baby and diaper bag and purse or do you intend on bringing all of the possibly needed necessities. The more you want to carry the more you will want a full size. Usually by the time you have a toddler you will want to go with the light weight stroller so if you are looking at full sized ones, keep in mind you will probably only use it for a maximum of 18 months if that depending on your climate.

3. What do I need to look for in a stroller? Is it really imperative to have a drink holder, for example? What little perks did you find that you couldn’t live without?

I think drink holders are very important. You can use them for you or for bottles, to hold change, toys, and many other things. I wouldn’t go without them. I would also try them out before buying. Ask, is the weight something you can deal with frequently, if it is too heavy then you will choose to go without it because of the hassle. Can you open and close it very easily? What is easy for one person might not be so easy for another. You want to reduce the frustration level as much as possible or you might just wind up leaving it at the mall instead of fighting with it.

Diapers & Formula:

1. Do I really need something like the diaper genie? A few people have told me that it’s more of a pain than anything. Is there something better? Or should I just throw it away in the garbage in the garage the old-fashioned way?

Diaper genies take a while to fill up and the smell will just accumulate. The bags do not prevent smell from escaping. I prefer the regular trash since the bag fills up in a couple of days and then gets taken out. No problem with lingering odors in the house.

2. Should I register for formula even though I’m planning on breastfeeding?

I wouldn’t register for formula. If breast feeding doesn’t work out for you and you decide to go with formula, you will want to buy it one container at a time until you find the one that “fits” your baby. You may go through several kinds/brands until you find the magic one.

Nursery:

1. I would get a pack and play. It is multi useful and I am a miser. I like to get the most from my money. It is also great for time away from home!

2. Glider or rocker?
Hmmmm. For me, I would say glider. I think gliders move easier with the lease amount of effort but either would work great.

17 MrsBagley 05.03.09 at 10:01 pm

I don’t have time to answer everything, but-

I want to echo the other commenters who said NO to registering for formula. Yes, samples will be readily available, but if you are committed to breastfeeding, you shouldn’t need them. It will be very hard in the beginning and I promise you’ll want to quit, but trust me, it’s all worth it when you see fat rolls on your baby and know you’re responsible for giving him the very best. (Yes, i’ll preach til I’m blue in the face about the benefits of bf’ing.) You might also consider registering for a breast pump- even if it’s just a hand pump (since you’re staying at home). You’ll want to be able to have a bottle handy when you’re out some days or if you and Tarzan want to leave the baby with your parents in order to have an hour for yourselves. Just a thought!!

Feel free to email me if you ever have questions or need encouragement- I’m here and have a couple of GREAT forums for information which helped me immensely in the beginning and still learn something new every day.

Try not to stress too much about registering. Have fun. Get what you like and know you can always edit your registries online once you’re done. Don’t feel like you have to have one of everything immediately. Register for the basics and then add other stuff later because I guarantee you’ll be overwhelmed by the choices.

18 Judith Brown-Fonger 05.04.09 at 7:43 am

Car seats:
I registered for the SnugRide, too. It gets excellent safety ratings and is available in a lot of colors/patterns. I also asked for a 2nd base. Also, from what I understand the seat can be installed without a base if you’re in a pinch.

Strollers:
I registered for the Quinny Zapp. It’s fairly lightweight but still feels sturdy. It has a lot of maneuverability, and folds up compactly. Oh, and it looks cool. I’m only 5′4″, so didn’t want a travel system. They seemed really large and cumbersome…Plus, a lot of them weigh in around 20 pounds. One of my priorities was being able to lift it into the car trunk by myself.

Backpacks & Carriers:
I got a diaper bag, by Allen Ave, that hubby wouldn’t be embarrassed to carry. I’m still shopping for a sling. I’ve heard that it might be best to wait until you have your baby to get a better fit, depending on which style of sling you want. I’m also hoping to get a baby bjorn as a hand-me-down…they get the best ratings across the board and my husband has said he will not wear a sling.

Activity:
I registered for a bouncer, and was given a swing. I’ve been reading recently that door jumpers are not advised for safety reasons.

Also, my SIL swears by her Baby Einstein excersaucer.

Diapers & Formula:
We’re going to try cloth diapers for at least the first three months while I’m on leave. I’ve hear that you really only need a trashcan with a tight fitting lid. As long as you’re emptying the can regularly, smell shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

As far as formula goes, I’ve heard that a lot of hospitals send you home with samples. And similac and enfamil also mail samples to new mothers.

Safety:
I registered for a Sony audio monitor…a video monitor seems like too much of a splurge. At the same time, I have a friend who works from home and loves having the video monitor for when she puts her son down during the day. She can get work done without getting up often to check on him.

Nursery:
We were given a bassinet that I plan to have in our bedroom for the first few months. We’re also getting a Pack n Play that has a bassinet to set up in our family room. I’ve heard of new mothers putting that in their bedroom in the first weeks home with baby. I’ve also heard that some of the co-sleepers can be converted into bassinets.

I’m still undecided about a glider/rocker…That will be my big splurge, and it’s something that I don’t plan to put on my registry.

Good luck!

19 bessie.viola 05.04.09 at 8:16 am

I have a list on my site: http://bessieviola.wordpress.com/madelines-must-haves-a-guide-for-everything-baby/

But to answer your questions (I LOVE talking baby gear, if you can’t tell!)
Car seats:
1. What brand do you prefer? Why? We used the Graco SnugRide for an infant seat. It’s the best-rated, it’s EASY to carry baby in – so nice when baby falls asleep in the car. Bonus: buying an extra base for Tarzan’s car will mean that you can take either car whenever you like.

2. Would you recommend registering for 2 car seats or just a car seat base for the 2nd car? Definitely just a second base for the infant seat, but register for the second car seat too – the convertible that baby will use once he’s over 20lbs or so (can’t remember specific number). We use the Graco Comfort Sport now, and our girl LOVES it. We did have to buy two of those, though, so if someone wants to buy one from the registry it’s great!

Strollers:
1. Did you opt for a travel system? Why or why not? (I’ve heard that they can be extremely heavy and bulky. Do you find this true?) Yes. We have the Graco travel system (I’m sounding like an ad here!) It’s heavy and a bit bulky, yes, but unbeatable for day trips or outdoor events – the stroller seat folds all the way down so you have a secure place for baby to nap (this was SO useful to me last fall when my DH was coaching football – she could nap right at the field). Also, SO HANDY to be able to (again) snap a sleeping baby from carseat to stroller.

2. Do we really need a mid-size stroller, full-size stroller, jogger stroller, and a lightweight stroller? If we do need more than one, can you tell me why it would come in handy please. I just have the big stroller – useful for reasons above – and then we bought a $20 umbrella, which is perfect for the mall, short little trips, and the like. That one lives in my trunk and is SO handy. I would say you definitely DON’T need all the strollers listed above; if you’re a runner I would maybe buy a jogger rather than a travel system.

3. What do I need to look for in a stroller? Is it really imperative to have a drink holder, for example? What little perks did you find that you couldn’t live without? Ummm… drink holder is nice, I guess. Biggest things for me: sunshade, good “seatbelts”, ample storage in the bottom (for diaper bag, play blanket, etc).

4. Is there a brand that you loved and would suggest?
GRACO. GRACO. GRACO. They know their stuff.
Backpacks & Carriers:
1. By backpack do they mean a diaper bag? If so, did you get one for yourself and another one for your husband? Or did you share a neutral colored one? We share a neutral, black diaper bag. I can’t see having two – it’s easy to keep one bag stocked at all times, ready to grab and go.

2. Do I need a sling and a more sturdy carrier? Why? What brands do you recommend and why? I think that a sling is handy, but to be honest I never have used either. I will buy a sling for our next baby, though, because I think it could have saved us a lot of grief in the beginning when she wanted to be held CONSTANTLY.

Activity:
1. Do I need a bouncer, walker, swing, and door jumpers? What brands did your baby like best? Are there certain things that I need to look out for? Oh, the bouncy seat was our TOTAL salvation in the beginning! Fisher Price makes one that’s good for up to 40lbs – it transitions into a little rocking chair. Madeline is 15mos and still uses it daily! She loves her special chair – so I’d definitely recommend that. Totally worth the $30. The swing was nice to have, too – sometimes that’s the only place she’d sleep when she was small. We don’t have a door jumper; we bought the stationary Little Einsteins jumper (link on my blog). She LOVED that for a long time… again, worth the money.

Diapers & Formula:
1. Do I really need something like the diaper genie? A few people have told me that it’s more of a pain than anything. Is there something better? Or should I just throw it away in the garbage in the garage the old-fashioned way? UGH, I HATE the Diaper Genie! Such a waste/so overpriced. We bought $15 diaper pails by First Years & I’ve been happy. As long as you can take out the garbage once or twice a week, you should have no smell issues. I spray our bag with air freshener when we change it, and it’s all good.

2. Should I register for formula even though I’m planning on breastfeeding? NO. Not to go all lactivist on you, but if you want to BF it’s best not to have it in the house in the beginning (for me, again – just an opinion). You may want to have a few bottles on hand, and definitely some milk storage in case you have oversupply (I did) and need to express/store.

Safety:

1. What brand do you like for audio monitors? I LOVE my AngelCare monitor – the sensor pad was a huge comfort in the beginning, and now that we’re past that stage the audio quality is crystal-clear.

2. What about video monitors? No experience here – sorry.

Nursery:

1. Do you recommend a cradle, bassinet, or a portable crib in addition to the “real” crib that will be in his nursery? I’ve heard that a pack and play works well for this beginning time. Would you agree? We just had a crib in her nursery (upstairs), and the pack & play (downstairs). The pack & play was nice because it had a little changing table, a vibrating bassinet, etc. To be honest, though, she slept in her little bucket carseat (Graco SnugRide) for the first 4 months or so. :) After that she was all crib, all the time.

2. Glider or rocker? We use a glider and love it. Very comfy – make sure it’s comfy because you’ll be spending lots of time there! :)

Good luck & HAVE FUN!!!

Car seats:
We bought a Graco safeseat and we love it except it is bigger than the snugride and most other carseats so it didn’t fit into restaurants booths etc. We are expecting again (twins) and will be buying snugrides for them from Graco as well. We didn’t move dd out of her infant seat until about 9 months and then she went into an Alpha Omega.

Strollers:
I LOVE my travel system! It is bigger but I can’t imagine not using it when dd was in her infant seat! It folds easily with one hand and is just so nice to have a big basket underneath and cup holders for mom and dad and to be able to hang the diaper bag off the handles (none of which you can do with umbrella strollers, they would tip over LOL)! Also I tried to leave the house everyday just to get out so we bought groceries as they were needed so the basket underneath was fine for that. If not the seat went into the grovcery cart and away we went.

2. Since we are expecting twins space it at an alltime low around here so we purchased a Graco IPO stroller ( I think they’re only available in Canada) which we thought was a decent combination of a higher end stroller and a more compact stroller…I will be going back to using my travel system stroller until the twins actually get here and I have to switch cuz I miss it so much but if you need/want the more compact stroller spend the money to get a good one the cheap strollers are pains in the butt. Look at the folding mechanism, that was our biggest point when buying again.

3. As for perks in strollers – CUPHOLDERS for mom and dad! I really miss mine when I try and go shopping with a starbucks in hand and now have to carry it. :(

4. My fav brand is Graco

Backpacks & Carriers:
I bought a penut shell and baby hated it! I ended up buying a wrap style so her legs could hang out and she loved that! Try any of the ones that are like the Moby style. Etsy has a ton of cute handmade ones!

Activity:
1. For newborns a vibrating bouncy chair and a swing are great! We bought both of ours from the rainforest line and LOVED them! We also have the rainforest jumperoo and that was great from about 5 months on (it’s a combination of a jolly jumper and an exercauser so it’s the best of both worlds I think!) Walkers are illegal here in Canada. :(

Diapers & Formula:
1. I love my diaper genie, diapers stink even with breastfed babies they just stink differently LOL!
2. I would wait on the formula

Safety:
Our monitor was given to us and we use (again) a Graco and it’s ok.

Nursery:
1. We started out using the playpen upstairs in our room but I needed somewhere to put her down during the day for a few minutes so we moved the playpen down to the living area and bought a bassinet…LOVED the bassinet! Hardly ever used the playpen. We did use it on trips but man my back got sore from bending down to pick her up (she was too big by then to use the bassinet attachment) and put her in many times throughout the day. That was probably the biggest waste of $ for us. Plus the bassinet parts of the playpen are only good for up to a certain weight so check that out cuz it might be better in the long run weight wise to get a bassinet. For the twins we will be putting a crib in our room (we were going to us the playpen but the weight issue with 2 would probably only let them sleep in there for a week or 2). The arms reach co-sleepers do look awesome but we are trying to be economical with twins on the way. ;)

2. Glider or rocker? We didn’t buy one and boy did I regret it…I used to stand in the living room and rock her for a few hours at a time when she was in a really bad stage and even the swing wouldn’t calm her, it was torture. Another good idea is just to get a nice recliner rocker for the living room and use it there but then you also have a new piece of living room furniture too. ;)

Good luck!

My little girl is only working on 4 wks old but i can help out a little bit hopefully =]

Car seats:

1. I didn’t really look into brands much when I picked a car seat, I looked at a couple we could afford and found one that I had heard of adn heard good things about, I ended up going with an evenflo travel system

2. I would go for 1 seat 2 bases. I don’t see a reason 2 have 2 of each

Strollers:

1. Did you opt for a travel system? Why or why not? (I’ve heard that they can be extremely heavy and bulky. Do you find this true?) I did get a travel system, I figured it would be easier for me when we go out and it was actually a bit cheaper for me than buying the stroller and car seat alone. It is a little bulky and if you are trying to get it up or down steps I’d suggest not putting the carseat on until you have the stoller off them, with the car seat it’s a little heavy to do it with, apart they aren’t bad at all, and it’s only going up and down the steps at my house that i have had any issue with the weight.

2.

3. I love that mine has a drink holder, when I g for a walk wih her I have somewhere to put a water bottle and still be able to push the stroller. mine also has a wipe thingy (don’t know what to call it) that snaps in and out up by the handles and cup holders. i took mine out, and use the tray area for my phone, her binky, keys and such.

4. Is there a brand that you loved and would suggest? as I mentioned with the carseat, I didn’t research much, but so far I have loved the evenflow travel system I got.

Backpacks & Carriers:

1. I’m not sure if they do mean diaper bag or not but if they do, I just got one that I liked, then again my hubby has no issue holding my purse in public if I need him to and I know he’d have no issue at all holding the diaper bag either. I did go with more neutral of a bag though brown with blue and green circles and dots, that way I flet comfortable carrying it every where since I’ve done away with my purse now that I have to have a diaper bag on me anyways.

2. I have both, I tried putting her in the sling once and she hated it, my friend had actually given it to me because her son grew out of it really fast. I have yet to use the other carrier since she hasn’t been holding her own head up for very long and she doesn’t have it fully masterd yet lol and haven’t had a reason either

Activity:

1. I would so get a bouncer if you baby is anything like mine, sometimes she just wants held and bounced and it wears out my arms I’d probably die if i didn’t have the bouncer seat to put her in, but she doesn’t stay in it long before she wants out. I have a bright stars bouncer seat, it vibrates and plays music. she doesn’t seem to care for the vibration and the music is so soft and low, I’m not sure she can even hear it even on it’s highest setting, i think i could have gotten away with one that was just the seat.

Diapers & Formula:

1. I’ve just been using the reg. trash can and honestly the is practically no smell. I was also told that breastfed babies poop doesn’t smell as much (and I have no noticed that during changes since we switched to formula) I decided not to get one because i was also told they were a pain, and the refills are spendy too…

2. Should I register for formula even though I’m planning on breastfeeding? I don’t know about registering for it but i would be sure to have a can or two just in case, my grandma convinced me to do so and I’m glad I did. There were a few times that she just wouldn’t latch on even though she was hungry. the one night she cried for 5 hrs and everytime i tried to get her to nurse she wouldn’t I finally broke down and gave her formula and she went right to sleep. (I ended up switching to formula becasue even though she’s latching right, she’s pretty much sucked the skin off of me and It’s become way to painful to even pump, thankfully again I had a couple cans of formula already)

Safety:

1. What brand do you like for audio monitors? I got fisher price… they are awesome, they pick up everything, have bulbs that light up the harder the baby is crying. the base has a night light too. Mine came with 2 monitors that can run on batteries or plug into the wall, and the base of course

2.

Nursery:

1. I have a small pack and play that has the bassinet too that way when she’s no longer in the bassinet we can still use the pack and play. I personally just didn’t feel comfortable having her in a different room, I still don’t adn she’ll probably be in the bassinet in my room until she no longer fits the bassinet. It’s been great so far and makes me feel a lot better and sleep easier having her right next to the bed at night. also when i was still breastfeeding, it made the night feedings SOOOOO much easier on me and kept her from crying so hard she woke up all the way, so she’s fal back asleep faster after feedings which was great when she’d get hungry at 3 am lol

2.I got a glider more or less for myself I’d wanted one for a while and I needed some place to sit upstairs for night feedings when she moves into her room. But mostly I wanted it just for me haha the baby was getting all kinds of stuff and It made me happy so I bought it. It was also wonderful when i was pregnant and my back would hurt or i needed to kick my feet up. I wouldn’t say it was a must have though

A Few things I would say to get, PLENTY of recieving blankets, onsies, & socks. Make sure you have newborn clothes… no one got us any we had maybe 4 or 5 outfits and all the rest were all 0-3 months and up . she was 6 lbs 13 and 3/ oz 19 and 3/4 in long and some of the newborn outfits were too big for her, but premie clothes were too small I had to go out and buy some more new born out fits so she had more than 4 things to wear.
A boppy, I love mine I actually have 2 one upstairs and one downstairs. they are great for nursing, or bottle feedings too, i also lay her in hers when i’m sitting on the couch and she falls asleep, so i can have my arms back lol. and rather than a sleep positioner i use the boppy for that too, I didn’t think i would need one and wasn’t comfortable with rooling up a blanket to prop her on her side a little in case she spits up (the first day we had her home she spit up during a diaper change and almost choked becasue she couldn’t get it out of her mouth being on her back and all so i refuse to sleep her fully on her back when i am sleeping she’s propped onto her side enough for any spit up to run out) the boppy works great for keeping her on her side a little and she can’t grab it and pull it over her face like a blanket.
Pick up more than one brand of diapers, I found that the ones I got didn’t fit her well enough when I first brought her home, any time she peed it would leak out the leg. so i had to go out and buy more of the ones the hospital sent home with us. they were huggies and were awesome at first, now that others (parents’ choice, walmart brand )fit just fine are cheaper and work just as well if not better. and if you think you might have enough wipes, get a couple more packs lol i’ve gone though 3 pack of 88 in just over 3 weeks, I thought those 3 packs would be enough for a little while, I was wrong, boy was i wrong lol.

Here’s a tip – make your your baby monitor doesn’t have the same frequency as other wireless devices in your house like your router or home phone or even your microwave. Check the numbers on the devices you already have and buy a monitor that’s different or else you’ll just waste your time and end up taking it back.

I know a lot of people like the baby slings but I really like the Baby Bjorn carriers. I’ve tried each model and they’re nice because they’re comfy and you can easily take the baby off if it falls asleep. I’d recommend the Air model because it’s more breathable. A plus for hot hot Texas weather. The slings are nice, too but I think the Baby Bjorn looks a little more manly and might encourage Tarzan to wear the baby more often.

Oh, and unless you’re going to jog, don’t buy a jogging stroller.

Again I would highly recommend the Girlfriends Guide To Baby Gear, grab it at your local library, it’s a quick and easy read that answers all these questions and more. But here are my opinions

Car Seats:
1. Graco for an infant seat, saftey and ease of use. Britax has high ratings for an older baby seat.
2. 2 bases but one car seat for the infant car seat. Again, register for the older child seat at the same time though.

Strollers:
1. I opted for a travel system both times and never regretted it. It was everything I needed all in one (stroller, carseat, etc). We switched to an umbrella stroller after the age of 2 or 3 but it was invaluable during that baby stage when they can nap in the stroller. This is one issue The Girlfriend’s Guide and I disagree on.
2. You (or those buying for you) usually get an umbrella stroller for free when you spend $100. Again I suggest the travel system – very nice to have. I’m 5′2″ and never found it too bulky. I got a jogging stoller second hand when I decided I wanted one.
3. A big basket for stuff (like diaper bags) is imperative. A snack tray for the little one is nice. A cup holder for yourself always comes in handy as well. Again I went with Graco for this – all in one and all needs met.

Backpacks & Carriers:
1. I think by backpacks they mean a carrier worn on your back. As for diaper bags we always had one diaper bag in black that either of us could carry.
2. never had a sling but want one this time. they look so nice! had a baby bjorn and it was a little complicated for me so I usually avoided it but some people love them. I think I’d rather a sling this time to make things simpler.

Activity:
1. a bouncer is a must have for putting the babe in while you do other things like shower – they can be right there in the bathroom with you. Fisher price makes a bouncer that goes from infancy to toddlerhood http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001HTJS60
I say a swing is an absolute must. The best purchase you will ever make, may save your sanity. I’ve also heard nothing but rave reviews about the new Graco Sweetpeace Infant Soother. Forget the walker and door jumper for safety reasons. But I did find a stationary entertainer (like an exersaucer) a lifesaver!! I’m telling you, grab a few minutes of sanity saving time wherever you can!!!!

Diapers and Formula:
1. The Diaper Genie is always a pain in the ass and gets tossed to the side eventually anyway. Forget it. I do suggest these little blue, powder scented diaper sacks to put the diaper in before you put it in the garbage
http://www.amazon.com/Sassy-Disposable-Diaper-Sacks-Count/dp/B000RHLSKC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1241462148&sr=1-3
2. Don’t register for formula. You never know what kind your baby will require, you may have to try several different kinds. Have a few of the ready made bottles on hand for when you get home from the hospital in case a situation of need arises. But try not to let it be the easy way out – breastfeeding takes determination. You may have to supplement per doctors orders though if the baby is jaundiced.

Safety:
There is no perfect monitor. But thebump.com posted a list of the best ones.
http://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/blogs/3rdtrimester/archive/2008/08/22/q-best-monitors.aspx?MsdVisit=1

Nursery:
1. I totally recommend a pack ‘n play with the bassinet and changing station. Again, everything you need all in one. Perfection. My son outgrew a regular bassinet in about 6 weeks. My daughter stayed in the pack ‘n play bassinet for three months, then you have a play pen already ready to go.
2. The glider, while not necessarily fashion forward, may be your best breastfeeding friend. Especially if you come home from the hospital with a sore bottom. You’ll also use it for years.

Might be too late for you, but the book Baby Bargains has been a lifesaver. It kinda cuts to the chase about what’s necessary and what’s not. It was invaluable for me doing my research before we registered a couple weeks ago.

25 Liz 05.04.09 at 10:23 pm

Let me preface my response by saying that I’m also a first time mom but I nannied and babysat a ton growing up and did lots of research, both online and talking to friends with kids 2 and under. If you don’t already have the book “Baby Bargains”, I highly recommend it – they have tons of good tips and pointers on all types of purchases.

Car seats:
1. What brand do you prefer? Why? We went with a Graco Snugride – it fits into other strollers besides the travel system and works for babies up to 32 lbs. We’ll be getting a Britax seat when our guy grows out of his infant seat.
2. Would you recommend registering for 2 car seats or just a car seat base for the 2nd car? 1 car seat and 2 bases

Strollers:
1. Did you opt for a travel system? Why or why not? (I’ve heard that they can be extremely heavy and bulky. Do you find this true?) We didn’t want the travel system b/c of the bulk. I recommend you both play with strollers before you buy. I’ve heard GREAT things about the snap ‘n rides to use with an infant seat b/f you go into a main stroller.
2. Do we really need a mid-size stroller, full-size stroller, jogger stroller, and a lightweight stroller? If we do need more than one, can you tell me why it would come in handy please. We travel a lot so we want something more portable for traveling than our “everyday” stroller – I think this is personal preference more than anything.
3. What do I need to look for in a stroller? Is it really imperative to have a drink holder, for example? What little perks did you find that you couldn’t live without? For us, we cared that it felt comfortable for both of us and that it fit in the trunks of our cars (some are too bulky even when folded to fit in the trunk of a sedan).

Backpacks & Carriers:
1. By backpack do they mean a diaper bag? If so, did you get one for yourself and another one for your husband? Or did you share a neutral colored one? Hmm…do they maybe mean a carrier where he goes on your back. My hubby and I picked out separate diaper bags…but we’re picky. :)
2. Do I need a sling and a more sturdy carrier? Why? What brands do you recommend and why? I’ve heard fabulous things about the Moby Wrap so that’s what I got – we’re also getting a Jeep carrier (like a baby bjorn) for hubby.
Activity:
1. Do I need a bouncer, walker, swing, and door jumpers? What brands did your baby like best? Are there certain things that I need to look out for? Based on nannying experience, this varies from one child to the next. Any of these items could be your best purchase ever but you’re not likely to love/need all of them. If you have friends you can borrow from or are willing to buy secondhand, you may want to do that until you figure out what to invest in. We bought a bouncer, are borrowing a swing (and will buy our own if our guy loves it) and had a walker given to us secondhand.
Diapers & Formula:
1. Do I really need something like the diaper genie? A few people have told me that it’s more of a pain than anything. Is there something better? Or should I just throw it away in the garbage in the garage the old-fashioned way? I’ve used diaper genie’s and they’re fine but I’ve read/heard terrible things. Lots of people told me to go with the Diaper Champ so that’s what we got – it takes regular garbage bags and is about the same size (maybe smaller) than the diaper genie.
2. Should I register for formula even though I’m planning on breastfeeding? I haven’t registered for any, but I’m erring towards having some in the house in the event of a middle of the night emergency. My theory is that it can’t hurt to have it if we absolutely need it or if my milk takes too long to come in and I need to supplement.
Nursery:
1. Do you recommend a cradle, bassinet, or a portable crib in addition to the “real” crib that will be in his nursery? I’ve heard that a pack and play works well for this beginning time. Would you agree? We’re also doing a pack ‘n play in addition to the crib but I don’t intend to use a cradle, bassinet, etc.
2. Glider or rocker? Figure out what you are comfortable with…and Tarzan too if he’ll use it. My hubby hated the feeling of a swivel rocker (that turns side to side, not just front to back) and we both got “seasick” in rockers that have moving ottomans. Also, a very helpful store clerk reminded me that I want to be comfortable sitting in the chair with a boppy so I’ll have room to nurse comfortably – that led me to a totally different purchase than I originally planned on.

Good luck, it can definitely be super overwhelming so don’t feel like you have to pick everything out in a single visit!!

I just wanted to say thank you to all of you that responded to this post. You all really helped me and gave me some really great advice! A few people have emailed me to let me know that they were in the same position as me and your advice helped them make a decision and not feel so overwhelmed! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!

I know that you are done registering by now and have had MORE than enough suggestions…but I can’t help myself!
I can however keep it short and just share the things I am so glad we have.

We got the Arm’s Reach Co-Sleeper for bassinnet-age and I am very happy with it. It is, however a bit heavy for traveling and such, but perfect for the months that it will be attached to the bed.

LOVE the Sony Baby Call monitor. NO STATIC! So clear that you can hear my son breathe. My favorite part is that there is a voice activated setting where the reciever is off until there is something to hear.

I have the Baby Ergo carrier and like it a lot. I don’t use it often anymore but just tonight used it to hold my 23 pound 13 month old son. Not perfect for newborns, but still doable. Next time I will employ a sling for when baby is small.

We use the Diaper Champ. Now that he’s on solid foods it’s not perfect at keeping out smells, but better than nothing and NO charge for refills as it uses the same kitchen bags we already have.

Just found your blog tonight as I’m very early in my second pregnancy. LOVE the blog and am glad I stumbled upon it.
You’re in the home stretch! Congratulations.

28 Kerry 08.12.09 at 8:24 am

Hey!

I’ve been following your blog for two weeks now and found this as I was reading back on your archives. It’s definitely addicting! This is from May I understand but I always need to give an opinion on things so here goes. I’m due in October with my second child. I didn’t have a baby shower the first time around because we didn’t know how the pregnancy was going to go (it went well woohoo!) but this time around we feel much better about everything! :)

If you’d like I can send you a link to my registry so you can take a look at some of the items I’ve included on there. (I don’t want to post it here just for privacy reasons since anyone can see it) haha:

Car seats:

1. What brand do you prefer? Why?

Britax — they have this great “air” feature which provides such amazing protection. “Unlike vehicle air bags which inflate, the Advocate side impact cushions are designed to manage the crash forces by compressing upon impact while safely expelling air through strategically positioned vents.” Specifically, I registered for this exact carseat since I knew the gender http://www.myregistry.com/giftideasdetails.aspx?pid=http://comfortfirst.com/images/variant/medium/147194.jpg

2. Would you recommend registering for 2 car seats or just a car seat base for the 2nd car? the latter –seems better to register for 1 since guests might get confused. also I didn’t want people to think I was going overboard. sorry…probably not a strong answer but the car seat base definitely works out!

Strollers:

1. Did you opt for a travel system? Why or why not? (I’ve heard that they can be extremely heavy and bulky. Do you find this true?) yes because it’s more convenient on you as a mom. trust me!

the Bugaboo stroller is really great for travel systems but it was too pricey and I wanted a jogging stroller so I registered for a quinny http://comfortfirst.com/p-132969-quinny-2009-buzz-3-stroller-free-shipping.aspx I can’t say I have problems with the travel system so far –great stroller!

2. Do we really need a mid-size stroller, full-size stroller, jogger stroller, and a lightweight stroller? If we do need more than one, can you tell me why it would come in handy please.

The Bob revolution stroller is really fantastic for jogging. it’s really popular. a bit pricey but holds up on all sorts of terrain. I placed one on MyRegistry.com account and someone purchased it the first day which was really generous!

3. What do I need to look for in a stroller? Is it really imperative to have a drink holder, for example? What little perks did you find that you couldn’t live without?
–a cover for the stroller in case of rain and for bug protection
–a drink holder
–and if you have a jogging stroller — a hands free conversion kit might be something of interest

4. Is there a brand that you loved and would suggest?

Phil & Ted is really great as is Quinny!

Backpacks & Carriers:

1. By backpack do they mean a diaper bag? If so, did you get one for yourself and another one for your husband? Or did you share a neutral colored one?

Yea. my husband registered for a diaperdude one and I registered for a skiphop bag!

2. Do I need a sling and a more sturdy carrier? Why? What brands do you recommend and why?

sling — Serena and Lily had a great one. I wouldn’t have registered originally there but they have a promo (still going on) where if you open a registry with them you get emailed $50 to spend at their store. So I registered for a Peacock Market Sling..it’s gorgeous and hopefully works out beautifully. I was going to originally opt for the Ergo Baby Carrier but I don’t like their style…seems too bulky!

Activity:

1. Do I need a bouncer, walker, swing, and door jumpers? What brands did your baby like best? Are there certain things that I need to look out for?

a bouncer is really good! I still don’t have one but all my friends have relished the Fischer Price My Little Lamb. it’s adorable and easy for storage (I have limited options!)

Diapers & Formula:

1. Do I really need something like the diaper genie? A few people have told me that it’s more of a pain than anything. Is there something better? Or should I just throw it away in the garbage in the garage the old-fashioned way?

Diaper Champ hands down!

2. Should I register for formula even though I’m planning on breastfeeding? I didn’t but that was a personal choice.

Safety:

1. What brand do you like for audio monitors? Fisher Price has great ones for these and relatively inexpensive

2. What about video monitors? Bebesounds Flat Panel Video & Sound Baby Monitor is really good. I can’t recommend anything else except the one I’ve used so far!

Nursery:

1. Do you recommend a cradle, bassinet, or a portable crib in addition to the “real” crib that will be in his nursery? I’ve heard that a pack and play works well for this beginning time. Would you agree? Yes it works great!

2. Glider or rocker? Rocker. I registered for one at CSN but they do add up and not sure if anyone will be able to buy a gift that costs that much and isn’t extremely essential like a stroller or car seat. I’m secretly trying to win the highchair and rocker Myregistry is giving away so here’s crossing my fingers! hahah.

Thanks so much for reading this and congratulations! Keep on blogging! Love your style and ideas :)

Hi Kerry! Thanks for your input too! It’s funny – When I wrote this post back in May I knew nothing (& I mean nothing) about anything baby. Now that our son is about 3 weeks old, I feel like I’m a lot more knowledgeable, so I got a good laugh at what a beginner I was with this post. LOL. Glad to have you as a reader & I’d love to read your blog. Just click on the “contact us” button below to send it to me. Thanks!
