I'm not expecting anyone to reply to this or any replies to be pleasant, but after coming across this page in a Google search, I couldn't be more happy to have the opportunity to read it. Being 18wks pregnant myself, it's good to have a laugh every once in a while.

But unfortunately, I have to disagree with part of this specific post.

I am a pet-owner, and have had to make an extremely tough decision to give my much beloved husky/wolf mix to a better home, only because I know outright from experience that he is not good with children who can't yet walk. He is extremely aggressive during playtime, and does not know his own strength, and for fear of hurting the baby, I felt it was a better idea to find someone else to take care of him. Not only that, he thinks he's a lap dog and tends to jump on my now-buldging belly more often than not. I am concerned for my child's health at this point, so understandably, the dog has to go.

Now, I am not planning to give him to just anybody, and I sure as hell won't be in any rush to get rid of him, so I am taking my time finding him a perfect home with someone who will let me keep in touch with him.

I do understand how wrong it is to be giving animals up and using pregnancy as an excuse, but in a situation like mine, sometimes you have no choice. Out of 6 of my pets, he is the only one I am considering rehoming.

It breaks my heart hugely to have to let such a companion go, and I most certainly wouldn't if I could see him being calm around the baby.

This is my first child, and although it wasn't planned, I am going to do what it takes to be the best mother possible to my child, I will do everything in my power to protect them. And if it includes passing up something that I love so much that I know may cause unpredicted harm to them, such as my beast of a dog, than I will do it right and ensure all parties in the matter are happy with the final outcome.

Responsibility is a huge role when both expecting children and owning pets, so you kind of have to do what's best in each situation.

Otherwise, I fully agree with keeping pets and accepting the responsibility at hand, pets are supposed to be a life-time commitment, but then again, so is having children.

Wow does this sound just like my situation. My dog's name is Molly, and to me she's more than a dog she's my absolute best friend, my daughter, and my shadow. I'm also having a boy so Molly will be a big sister and she's very excited. She's not at all good with babies but we'll deal with it. She is also my baby so just because the older sibling doesn't do well with his new baby brother/sister does that mean you give them away? NO!! I like you picture Molly and the baby playing together, napping together, I can't wait. Also like you people who ever give their pets away without a VERY good reason make me sick. So if you don't melt at the sight of an animal and if you don't feel that compassion with them then here's a simple way to resolve that issue.....DON'T GET A PET!!!!!!!

My parents told me I should get rid of my little Chihuahua since I told them I am pregnant. But my little guy is so gentle, he loves children. My house is right at the school bus stop, every morning when I walk him, he waited to greet the children. He does not bark (Well only at night when he is lonely), he never bite any one, you can tease the heck out of him and he won't even bat and eye and turn aggressive. The only problem my mom have with little guy is, he shed. I have told mom that I will never get rid of him, because he IS my first born.

Well, I am having my little guy lay on my belly( technically, just his little head, he wait only 8 lbs) in the evening when we sat down to watch TV. I hope he is bonding with my baby. I swear he knew something is up, because he is very attached to me lately. He doesn't even want to go to daddy unless daddy have treats in his hand.

My sister -in-law gave up her pet because her child is allergic to the pet. That was so sad. She gave up her pet to her parents. At least the parents are understanding and taken in the little pooch. I hope more families are willing to help out in this kind of situation.

All animals need to be respected more in this world - especially ones you have in your home. I am 30 weeks preggie and haven't even considered moving my three dogs to another home. All of them have been a huge part of my famdamily life and wouldnt' change it for the world. Two of my dogs are nine years old and have had lots of experience with little people - so I'm not concerned about these two whatsoever, however my youngest one - who is two in October - is a bit of a concern. She gets very jealous, even when me and hubby are hugging! I've realised this may be because of her hormones - yes dogs have them too - and so I am taking her to the doctors/vets tomorrow for desexing. I'm hoping this will calm her down a bit. I have also made sure they are with little people as often as possible which is assuring me they will be ok. The funny thing is that all the little people who visit us really only want to see my doggies and not us... just shows you little people want to be around animals. Great for learning skills etc... Animals rule!!! They always love unconditionally - what an amazing gift to teach your children in this very mixed up world full of hate and violence!

I just wanted to come back and give a thank you to tjwriter - your comment on the Pit bull made me smile. I grew up with Pits from a very young age, with the right home/educated owners they are wonderful dogs and I always love to see a positive comment about them. :)

Thank you! I am involved in Italian Greyhound rescue and we get some many dogs released to us because of this reason. Thank you for not only NOT being one of those people, but taking a stand against it. This was a refreshing read. :-)

I completely agree with you on this! I am 26 weeks along, and we adopted a 2 month old puppy one month before we found out we were pregnant. We all know puppies are a handful, but that combined with new baby is no excuse for me to get rid of her. We also have an inside cat, who has been a part of the family for years. It appalls me when pregnant women want to just ditch their pets due to - not wanting the added responsibility or just something as stupid as not wanting pet hair in the house. Take care of your kid, take care of your dog, it's all a part of being a responsible adult human being.

Oh man.. I can't tell you how many people have asked me if I was going to get rid of my cat. My manager at work told me this huge story about how she FINALLY had a good reason to get rid of her cat. I don't think expected me to get offended.

But my cat has already been exposed to a range of children at all ages. I'm the oldest of 7 with the youngest having been 18mons. when we got my little orange beast. So a newborn will be new to him but this is a cat that lets toddlers drag him around by his back paws. He just looks up at me and meows til I free him lol.

I will NOT be getting rid of my cat. He's my first baby, even though my tarzan thinks the cat is bonkers, he's seen how well the cat deals with children.

The people we got one of our dogs from got rid ofhim because she was pregnant. Not that they were taking good care of him to begin with. He's a pit and the whole time I was pregnant with my first, my dad was pressuring me to get rid of him.

Out of the three dogs we have, he's the best with the kids. The little ones can grab and pull while he sits there and tries to lick them. It's cute. The three year old covered him in yellow highlighter, and he didn't even bat an eye. They let me know if they've had enough from the kids and I intervene.

Of course, we don't leave them with the kids. Even at night. We kennels in our bedroom and they sleep in those at night.

I know that I don't get to spend as much time with the dogs as I used to, but they still get love, care, full bellies, and soft beds.

AMEN! Although, I've never actually heard of anyone getting rid of a pet for their baby. I think this has something to do with the fact that most people we know aren't pet owners until after they have kids. But it seems so unbelievably WRONG to abandon your pet when you're expecting. Are you planning on abandoning your child when things get a little rough too?
