33 weeks pregnant: Seafood, pregnancy, and me do not mix

by Jane on June 8, 2009 · 7 comments

At 33 weeks pregnant I can't eat seafood anymore.I don’t think that I can eat any kind of seafood anymore while being pregnant.  It’s funny that it took being 33 weeks pregnant to finally make this decision.

Since getting pregnant, seafood has not even sounded good to me until Mother’s Day.  My whole family went out to eat and I ordered salmon and shrimp.

It tasted good going down, but then I noticed a rash developing on both of my legs.  I was itching like crazy and one benadryl would not take the itch away.  It took taking two benadryls to feel better and make the itching stop.

Weird, right?

I totally figured it was a fluke though and didn’t think too much about it until the next seafood encounter two weekends ago.

Tarzan and I went to a restaurant and I ordered fish tacos.  Yum!

Same thing happened though…

Another pair of itchy legs that were red and hive-y.  No fun and another two benadryl down my throat.

At this point I was starting to see a pattern here so I decided two weekends ago that I would no longer partake in seafood while being pregnant.

That lasted until this past weekend.

I went out to dinner and ordered lobster ravioli.  The funny part about this whole thing is that it didn’t even dawn on me that I had given up seafood for the duration of my pregnancy.  Oh no, I completely forgot.

But I soon remembered after I gobbled down the ravioli and had itchy legs.  Damn, why the memory loss?!  Oh yeah, I’m pregnant and have become a bit on the stupid side, even though this should be somewhat important.  Ugh.

After swearing off seafood again, would you believe that I ordered fish and chips at a pub yesterday?  Oh yes, it’s true.  Pregnancy has officially made my memory shrink down to nothing.

Strangest part about yesterday’s fish and chips?  My legs did not get itchy afterwards.

I’m not sure if it’s shellfish that causes my legs to “flare” up or what, but cod seems to be mild enough that no reaction occurred.  Or perhaps it was that I only ate one little piece of cod since remembering that I’m not supposed to eat it.

Naturally I’ve forgotten to call my OB about this issue too.  I’m sure it’s not harming the baby, but I think that I’ve definitely developed some kind of allergy to seafood or shell fish, in particular.  And I’m curious to know if it’s been this way my whole pregnancy or if it just started in the third trimester?

Has this happened to anyone else?

I had a similar experience with seafood about 3 days after I found out I was pregnant. My husband and I went to Red Lobster and I had shrimp linguini alfredo and of course asked if they could add a few scallops to it:) It wasn't until the next night that I woke up at 2:30 a.m. itching like crazy with hives and swollen eyes! I barely got any sleep for two nights. I did however question if maybe I had gotten too much sun the previous day and that's what did it?.....so I went to the pool the next weekend and nothing. I am almost positive it was the shrimp and scallops. No shrimp or scallops for me the next 9 months....and it is my favorite:(

I'm sorry to contradict, but a pregnant mother will not have allergic reactions to something their unborn child is allergic to. The mother and child's circulations are separate during pregnancy. Substances can filter into the baby's bloodstream from the mother via the placenta, but not vice-versa. The only time there is 'mixing' of the two bloodstreams is possibly during delivery or if there is some kind of placenta accident or miscarriage.

Interestingly though- I had a bad case of hives in one of my pregnancies in the early weeks. It lasted off and on for about 4 weeks and it was horrible. I never did find out what was causing it. I worked in a hospital and one night it got so bad that I even had to go to the ER for a shot of epinephrine to try to settle it down.

Do keep in mind (although at this rate I am not sure if you will remember ;) ) It is possible that your baby will be allergic to seafood and his allergy is causing you to react to try to get you to stop eating it. I would be very cautious when little Tarzan gets old enough to eat fish and when testing the waters, be prepared to go to the hospital just in case.

I had a strange rash that appeared out of nowhere but it wasn't due to seafood....possibly peanut butter cookie dough which I shouldn't have eaten but had a crazy craving for. The only seafood I eat is some occasional salmon and tuna. It's so strange all the random things that can crop up while prego.

I CRAVED seafood while I was pregnant (seafood and salsa - mmmm fish tacos), so I can't help with that particular seemingly allergic reaction except to say that I'm pretty sure pregnancy made me lactose intolerant. I talked to my doctor about it, and he assured me that it wasn't possible, but my gut instinct told me that he was wrong. I couldn't eat anything dairy without having severe digestive problems. And I LOVE dairy - milk and cheese especially. As soon as I delivered I was fine. So I would say anything can happen while your pregnant. And as a side note, my daughter (now almost 13 months) is NOT lactose intolerant.

No allergic reactions so far. However, at 13 weeks, I've noticed a general aversion to seafood. Seeing as how I LOVE seafood and usually can't get enough of it, it makes me a bit sad. It doesn't even taste the same as it used to.

I have however, eaten more potatoes in the past couple months than I have in years. That, I can only hope is a temporary insanity.

You wouldn't catch me eating seafood at all, so I cannot say that I've had similar experiences. I have, however, noticed that things I used to love, like fruit smoothies, give me wicked heartburn now. And as of this weekend, eating in general has made me all crampy and bloated feeling. (I'm 24 weeks.) My friends have been telling me to expect the unexpected when it comes to being pregnant because you just never know how you're going to react to different things. I'm learning that what they're telling me is true!
