29 ways to induce labor at home naturally without having to sit 9 hours in an uncomfortable Yoga position!

how to induce labor at homeThe last couple of days have been wild to say the least!  As you can see by the past two blog posts, Jane and I have been really busy between what we thought was labor and the “real deal” to Jane becoming very emotional today.  It’s been a draining two days – especially since we’re actively trying to induce labor at home!

So for those of you pregnant ladies out there, you may want to forward this post to your husband, especially if you guys are going through a dry spell!  Yes, there is light at the end of the tunnel!

Early on in Jane’s pregnancy, I often blogged about the lack of sex.  Lack meaning NONE and I thought that it was nothing but a distant memory.  Jane was rarely in the mood and with her hormones raging at times, it was safe for me to keep a few feet from her sometimes anyway.  ha ha.

But now-a-days, LOOK OUT.  And what can I say, it’s the Doctor’s orders.  At Jane’s appointment yesterday I asked her Doctor, “how can we naturally induce labor”?

She looked over at me and said one word.  “Sex”.  She then followed that by, “lot’s of sex”.  My reply was of course, “sounds like a good plan to me!”

So Jane and I of course have to follow her Doctor’s orders, right?  Of course!  It’s time to get the whole labor and delivery stage going here.

Now Jane and I are on a mission.  We are trying to find all the ways we can naturally induce labor here at home.  Can you help us?  If there isn’t anything on the list based on some research we did, feel free to comment below.  We’re ready to get things rolling, that is of course if Baby Tarzan is ready to get things rolling with us.  In the end, it’s all up to him, but I’m sure it won’t hurt if we help move things along a little and make it easier for him!  So here’s…

29 Ways To Induce Labor At Home

1. Walking

2. Galloping (huh? See video below)

3. Acupuncture

4. Pressure points

5. Spicy foods

6. Sex and orgasms

7. Nipple stimulation

8. Pineapple

9. Dancing

10. Squatting

11. Relaxing

12. Meditation and/or visualization

13. Evening primrose oil

14. Red raspberry leaf tea

15. Castor oil

16. Herbs (such as black and blue cohosh)

17. Massage

18. Glass of wine (Consult your doctor!)

19. Stripping the membranes

20. Marching up stairs

21. Rent a sad movie and cry like crazy

22. A really bumpy car ride

23. Bouncing and stretching on a birth or exercise ball

24. Swimming

25. Mowing lawn or picking weeds

26. Jump on a swing and start swinging

27. Talk to your baby and tell him/her it’s OK to come out now

28. Watch a really funny movie and laugh until you pee

29. Get down on all fours and shake that booty

As far as that “galloping” deal to naturally induce labor, see the video below.  All I can say is that I highly doubt any of us will see Jane galloping down the road like this.  And if I was driving down the road and saw a pregnant woman doing that, I’d pull over and ask her if she’s OK!

So how about you?  Any ideas?  Anything not listed above that
was successful in inducing labor for you?

* Disclaimer: Remember, Jane nor I are doctors. Please consult your doctor before trying any of these methods on this post, comments by others, or anything else mentioned on our blog.  Also remember that none of these methods are guaranteed to work if the baby in your body isn’t ready.

My husband and I are 39 weeks and we started the list last week after some serious reading. Midwives and dr’s do not recommend castor oil because it can cause not only diarrhea, but vomiting too, which can lead to dehydration. As for the the pineapple thing, the chemical that is responsible for inducing labour is not available in large enough amounts to induce labour after one serving. You may need to eat several whole pineapples, which may not induce labour , but will give you the runs!!

I am due in 9 days and it seems like everyone around me is impatient for my little girl to be here. she is my first and I’m excited but I tell her she can come whenever she wants. I’m 2cm dialated and 90% effaced but I know she’ll come when she’s ready. Enjoy this time with your baby safe in your belly cause its exponentially harder to keep them safe when they’re here!

Ok so I have been doing a lot of research and talking to doctors about inducing labor, the only thing that REALLY works is sex, relaxation, caster oil, and breast stimulation. The reason that sex works so well is because sex can help by releasing a hormone called oxytocin, which causes the uterus to contract. Additionally, semen contains a substance known as prostaglandins, which will help soften the cervix. Pretty much the semen eats away at the tissue of your cervix to cause it to efface. Relaxation because it causes your uterus to relax which can lead to contractions. The caster oil works like a laxative and causes you to have diarrhea the work your stomach muscles are doing to cause you to have those bowel movements cause the uterus to contract and you to dilate. The breast stimulation works like having sex or orgasm, it releases the hormone oxytocin, which tells your body to react by having contractions. Now just remember that doing all of these things can help induce labor at home, but it will only work if your body is really close to being ready. Just because you are impatient and you FEEL ready your body and baby may not really be ready.

Hi I’m 36 weeks pregnant with my 3rd child. I have two boys and this is suppose to be my girl. I am scheduled to have a c-section on the 25th of this month but I can’t do the c-section thing for the second time. I like vaginal birth a lot better. Less pain, I mean the heeling process. So I’ve been having some contractions for about two days now and I have told my doctor. I want to be fully dilated before I let the doctor know. That way he will have no choice, but to let me have her vaginal. I need to speed up the process any idea? I need to have stronger contractions and dilate before the 25th.

Just thought I would share my experience with castor oil… I’m 40 weeks tomorrow and having light cramping but nothing really serious and I lost my mucus plug about 5 days ago and continue to lose it everyday since it just replenishes. I took castor oil two weeks ago and had the runs ALL DAY LONG (it tastes like freezer burn to me) ended up in the hospital that night with mild and steady contractions, 7 minutes apart, that ended a few hours after I got there. Needless to say they sent me home because I was only 1cm and 50% effaced and not progress. I waited until the next week and took it again with no poops but 3 or 4 hours later I was having strong, painful contractions that were 2 min apart when I got to the hospital….. to no evail!!!!! I wasn’t progressing at all so was sent home with a sleeping pill and good wishes. Now we’re where we are now, stalled and waiting. Thought you all should know how my experience was!

Perhaps try reading sites that actually contain proven information. The majority of things on this list will not induce labour and are absolute rubbish. Others are myths and misinformation. Why not inform yourself by reading studies into the effectivness of these things and instead of trying things will not work.

Hi, I am 37 weeks with my third. I went into pre term labor on Mother’s Day but they stopped it. I just went to the doctors this Tuesday and was 1 c.. I have tried walking, nipple stimulation, squatting. No sex though because I heard once your dilated, you could cause an infection. I have talked to my baby to tell him its ok to come out. I won’t try castrol oil, bad experience with my first. I don’t know what else to do, I guess patience is a virtue. Good luck ladies

*lol* Reading online this morning about inducing labor is just making me laugh. I have had an ideal pregnancy. No pain really, unless I stand or walk too much, than I start to feel it in my lower back. I feel great! The only problem… I’m 41 weeks pregnant now and even though I’m the kind of person that believes in trusting her body and letting things happen naturally and not stressing out… well heck! I’m starting to worry. *lol* I thought I would’ve gone into labor 2 weeks ago. I’ve tried pineapple, nipple stimulation, orgasms, visualization, long walks, chinese food (my mom’s personal sure fire way that always got her going), and now I think it’s time for a few more things. I’m going to do Borage or Primerose oil in a capsule to ingest or insert vaginally, I’m going to go see my homeopath as I think a remedy might help, and I’ve already had my body naturally flush out my bowels… which I’ve heard usually means labor will be happening within a day or so…. which wasn’t true in my case. *pout* Wish me luck!!!

yep 36 and a half weeks.
i have just tried the sex and walking so far.
dont really want to risk too much for my baby by doin the castor oil and stuff unless u guys know it wont affect him?? but gonna try the nipple stimulation and i am hoping that something will happen. just having cramps and a bunch of pressure down there.
im dialated at 1 and a half right now and 50 % effaced.
hoping something will occur soon.

I’m 38 +4 and I’m ready for baby to come now, I’ve tried the lot and my midwife told me that pineapple and spicy food are the same as having Castor oil (Basically it gives you the poops!) But you have to eat SEVEN pineapples in one day for it to have any affect :( Also the raspberry leaf tea isn’t to induce labour its to speed up the process when your in established labour so keep going with that! I got told the only one that really works is sex other than that I’ll just have to wait it out!

I am 37 weeks and 3 days and ready this is number six and I cant drink the castor oil I have tried and threw up I want to try the black and blue cohosh

I am 40 weeks pregnant [he is due today], and have been to the hospital once but was sent home. I am not experiencing any contractions, haven’t lost the mucous plug, and really just are not having any signs of labor. I am dying to try some of these methods, because I don’t want to have a late baby and I want pregnancy to be over with! so far i’ve tried sex, swimming, pineapple, walking, nipple stimulation, and dancing and NONE HAVE WORKED! I am so irritated! I just want him to come out already :[ My doctor’s appointment is tomorrow and I am going to beg to be induced.

43 Emmah

I am 37 weeks today and ready for this baby to be out!. I went 42 weeks with my last baby and finally resorted to sex!. Me and my husband went home after Christmas dinner. Did the deed that night, woke up the next morning at 8am with contractions, and that day had our beautiful daughter!

48 Melissia

Im pregnant with my 3rd baby im 38 weeks 1 day dilated at 3 cm 100% effaced… im so ready to have her it isnt funny… with my second daughter i drank a whole 4 or 6 oz bottle of castor oil… got the runs for the day and went into labor with her 2 days later… but i was also dilated at 3cm and effaced 100%… castor oil only works if ur baby and body is ready and needs a little push… im thinkin about doin it again but the contractions from the castor oil where out of this world worse than naturally goin into labor…

I am 36 weeks with #4 but I’ve been on bed rest since 32 weeks because of preterm labor. I’m sitting at 5cm 90% effaced and I’m going nuts because I’m convinced when I do go into labor I won’t make it to the hospital. At 36 weeks pregnancy #3 I started drinking 2-3 cups of raspberry leaf tea a day and at 37 and 5 I went to my checkup and I was sitting at a 7 with no contractions. They sent me to the hospital and induced me because they were worried about me making it to the hospital. The first 2 were late, but with my second they stripped my membranes and 3 days later I went into labor out of nowhere. It was a 40 minute drive to the hospital and by the time we got there I was 10 cm. She was born 17 minutes after getting to the hospital. Now that we’ve gotten this one to stay put I dunno how long it’s gonna work. I haven’t tried anything to get this labor going because it’s still early, but lord knows I’d like to!

I’m 35 weeks and 4 days with baby # 5. I can’t sleep, get comfortable, I’m irritable more than ever and I just can’t wait any longer. I m tryin to be very patient but I gave a 19 month old who is sometimes difficult to control. I clean everyday and walk hoping it will help me go into labor. I’m about 3 cms dilated and I’m tryin to hold in to the end. Does anyone know of anything to help with the irritability and sleepness?

53 Amber

Just so everyone knows im 36 weeks pregnant! and i tried to drink the red raspberry leaf tea and it made me sick as a dog! i do not advise anyone to try this. and this is my second pregnany already 2cm dilated and 75% effaced.

Im 37 weeks with my 4th child…im pretty sure ill be going over with this 1 also…my 1st was 2 weeks late,2nd 1 day late due to kidney problems and 3rd 1 week late all were induced with pitocin…my 3rd pregnancy i tried everything on the list and nothing worked…this 1 im just taking my time i guess….. i am very uncomfortable but hey when its baby number 4 whats the rush. i dont thnk some people can go into labor on there own no matter what the try because i think i would have started labor with at least 1 pregnancy…although i did with my first baby at 27 weeks but of course they stopped it and then 2 weeks over i went…fun fun…anyways good luck everyone.

56 Della Case

The doctor will decide if the induced labor is required, depending on more than one factor. This is done either before the due date, or when the pregnancy poses a threat against the lives of mother and fetus. Induced labor and birth will also be provoked when the due date passed with more than one week, which can cause fetal problems, since on occasions the placenta is not enough for him.

I have a list of 40 ways to induce labour naturally – the castor oil was what did it for me though.

60 cheri

This is my second child, I am now past due since Thursday. The first, I thought that I would let her come naturally and she was 2 weeks past due and still had to be induced. She was 8lbs 12oz and was almost too big to fit through my birth canal. The doctore will not let this one get that big and I am glad!!! Talk about a killer epesiotomoy and now I have pubic syphamasisis pain due to the first childs size. I hope these tricks help!!! I do not want to have to be induced with pitocin again!
