I’m confused: Do I count Monkey’s age in weeks or months?

by Jane on October 14, 2009 · 25 comments

baby birthdayI feel so dumb even posting this question on here, but I can’t figure out what to do.

Monkey was born on July 23, 2009.  Like pregnancy, the first few weeks of a baby’s life are counted in weeks.  Well, that is where the problem arises because tomorrow Monkey will be 12 weeks old.

12 weeks old equals 3 months, right?

We will start counting in years, I’m guessing, when he turns one year old, which will be next July 23rd.

Can you see where the dumbness that is me is getting confused?  If I keep on celebrating his monthly birthdays according to the weeks, he will actually turn one year old sooner than July 23rd.  (Believe me, I know how dumb this sounds…)

So when do I stop counting weeks & just start going by the 23rd of each month for his monthly birthdays?

&, more importantly, does this bother anyone else?

I like Kevin's response! That's pretty much how I did it too. Many people continue on with the, "He/she will be/just turned ______ in _______ " for years though. Why stop that at 1 or 2? In fact, when kids get old enough to answer the question themselves, they often reply, "I'll be _____ in _____."

I've figured out this: Go by weeks until 3 months. Go by 1/2 months until 6 months. Then go by months until 2 years old, HOWEVER, 2 months before and 2 months after birthdays 1 & 2 you will state his/her age as "He/she will be/just turned [1 or 2] in [insert month here]."

haha Jane you ROCK!! I had this exact dilemma almost 2 weeks ago.

My little man was 4 weeks on October 7th, but his one month birthday wasn't until October 9th. So when I met with some friends on Oct. 7th, I said he was 4 weeks. They were like oh yay! We get to give him presents on his 1 month! I was like nooo..he won't be one month until the 9th. And then everyone looked at me like i was stupid LOL!

So i'm doing both right now. And at some point I'll start to just do months. So silly!

Hmmm. . .it bothers me now that you mention it, actually.

we do months. the twins are 3 months and 1 week old right now as of oct 8. I stopped counting in months with Adia at 2 years.

We converted when G was about 3 months old as well. Stuck to X Months or X 1/2 Months. And we still count by months - which I imagine will stop doing around 21/22 months old...at which point I'll probably just say...oh, she'll be 2 in May.

I agree, totally confusing. I converted to months when he hit 3 months old.

I was wondering this too. Wow, I didn't realize until just now that our boys were born on the same exact day! Funny, makes it even more fun to read about your milestones!

Yes, this annoys me just as much as the pregnancy weeks did. 40 weeks from the day of your last period . . . when you were NOT actually pregnant - Oy!

I did the week thing for a few months and then said he's __ months old. Once the boys hit 1 it was he turned 1 in ___ or he will be 2 in ___.

I count weeks until maybe 10-12 weeks, then I start counting in months. I can't stand when people say, "My baby is 26 weeks old!" What the hell? I'm not that good at math. You'll notice milestones go by months, not weeks.

You'll probably continue counting months until your baby is 2. Even at a year old, their milestones and checkups/shots go by months. Similarly, I can't stand when people are still counting months after 2 years old. I don't know how old your baby is when you say he's 44 months old.. that's ridiculous. Isn't it easier to just say 3 and a half?

I stopped counting week at about 4 or 5 months old.

Now I'm counting in years!!!!

oh yes, it bothers me too. my twins are 14 weeks but 3 months old. They were actually 3 months and 13 weeks 1 day on the same day :)

isn't it all nonsense?

I'm going to start going by months PLUS they're prem so then I subtract so I can adjust their age - I don't even know how old they are these days :)

Once I got to 3 months/12 weeks I started counting in months

It's funny because I have always wondered the same thing. I know people who refer to their kids in terms of months until after they are 2 years old, so anything after 24 months. Maybe it's because of how clothing is sized. I say do whatever is easiest for you, if you are more comfortable thinking in terms of months then do months. But I would guess you really wouldn't want to refer to your son as being 50 weeks old. I think after the 1st 3 months or so it just gets easier to say in terms of months.

I go by weeks until around 12, then months. its just too confusing, especially for those who dont have kids

Wow, I can't believe non of yall have more important things to ponder. Most months have 30-31 days, not 28 days, hence the discrepency.

I go by months. I took a picture of my children every month the first year so I could see how they grew and changed. I tried to use the same background and I did it on the day they were born each month. So my daughter who was born on May 18 had her picture taken on the 18th every month. I'm so glad I did this now they are getting older.
I think the easiest thing is to go by months. In my kids scrapbooks it's been a great way to do the first year.

I've been thinking about this too!! Mine is 10 weeks, but I'm trying to decide when is the cut off for weeks to months.

Yes, it's annoying! Jackie- I did the exact same thing. His birth-day, Tuesday, was so momentous that I kept marking each Tuesday as 1 week, 2 weeks, etc. Then I had the "how old is he really?" problem, and my husband thought I was weird. Now we're at 20 months, and I think the issue becomes months vs. years...

let me add, on the past 2 thursdays weve been saying, Little one is (X) weeks old! so when the 24th of next month comes up, its on a saturday, so do we just change it to the 24th of every month, or what??

i was thinking about this today. I had my baby sept 24th, so on October 24th will he be one month old.. or will he be 4 weeks and 3 days old? ugh. haha

You can use both! The reason there is the discrepancy is because if you assume that there are 4 weeks in a month, that would only equal 28 days. Most months have 30 or 31 days. So you can say that he is 12 weeks old, but you have to wait until the 23rd of the month to say that he is three months old. Make sense? Maybe it's just me, but as my daughter got older, it got harder to keep track of the months, and the weeks didn't seem as relevant any more because she stopped changing so much week to week. We probably stopped counting weeks somewhere in the 20s.

When my daughter was born a year ago, we always said she was (?) weeks old, until she was about 12 or so weeks old and then I think we started saying she was (?) months old, after the day of each month that she was born. I guess I never really like it when people tell me their baby is 20 or 30 weeks old. It leaves me to do the quick math in my head, and I don't really care for it. I would rather just have them tell me their baby is 5 months or whatever. So to clear up all of the confusion I think going by week's are fine up until a certain point (whenever you choose- we chose 3 months), and then just start going by months. I don't think when he is 51 weeks old, you will be saying "this is my baby "monkey" he is 51 weeks old." So I think by the time he turns 1 you will already just be counting the months! It would be SO nice if everything just matched up on the calander perfectly 12 weeks= 3 months!

My little guy was born on May 20...today he was 21 weeks...or 5 months...but the doctor always goes by the 20th of the month instead, so by the doctors measurement, he isn't quite 5 months. I think I at the point of dropping weeks and going by months now. Not much help because it confuses me too.
