Things have been crazy lately with getting ready for Christmas and a few other things, hence my small ‘break’ from blogging. I plan on resuming the giveaways later today, so please check back so that you have a chance to win.
Monkey and I have lunch plans & an afternoon filled with shopping, so I just wanted to ask a question real fast.
Monkey started off in Pampers Swaddlers from the time we left the hospital. Well those diapers were a big fail for us because he leaked & leaked. We made the switch to Pampers Baby Dry & I’ve been in love since. They have been absolutely wonderful for Monkey & in preventing leaks until 5 days ago.
He woke up from his good night’s sleep and his shirt was wet. Hmm. This hasn’t happened since he was a newborn, so I thought it was a fluke. Fast-forward to the next night and the next night and the next night & the same damn thing happened. Of course it’s not good for Monkey to have pee on his belly when he wakes up, but it’s also the biggest pain in my ass to have to undo his mobiles, take out the crib mattress, change the sheets, and repeat night after night.
Yesterday I bought Pampers Cruisers, but Tarzan changed him before bed and (shockingly) didn’t read my mind that I bought new diapers. Monkey woke up wet again. Poor little guy.
So I need to know if this happened to you & what diapers worked well. The Baby Dry diapers work fabulously throughout the day, but I guess they just don’t hold 12-13 hours of pee at night. Until I hear back from y’all as to what worked, I’m going to have some high hopes for the Cruisers.

Ever thought about using cloth diapers? That’s what we use. They are so cute and just as easy as disposables…but you can add inserts to increase absorbency. I used disposables with my older three and used LUVS w/o a problem. Good luck!
Are the diapers too small for him? And this might sound weird, but his his winky pointed down? That could help. And smack Tarzan for not reading your mind! Dude, take your mind reading pill already!!
There are night-time diapers. They absorb more. Pampers makes some. I also have noticed when my daughter starts leaking, it’s generally time for the next size up.
I’m having the same problem. Poop is shooting out the back of his diaper up his back. He is 3 months old and every night this week he’s had poop up his back. He is long, but has a tiny waist, I’m thinking that has something to do with it.
good luck, hope you find a fix.
Boys tend to leak a lot more. Make sure his you point his pee pee down when changing his diaper. I love anything Pampers, with that said you may have to go up a size. Also, at 1 point I had to get the rubber diaper covers from Babies R Us and put them on him at night. They were a good investment. Good luck to you; I know it can be frustrating.
If he is wet on his belly, make sure that A) his “bits” are pointing downward and B) perhaps go up a size and see if that’s any better particularly if he is near the top end of the weight range. I never liked Pampers personally. I am in the UK so don’t know if you have Huggies? I prefered them for my son although my daughters both did fine in supermarket own brand. You could try and make sure that changing him is the very last thing you do before bed too.
We use Huggies Snug & Dry (equivalent to Pampers Baby Dry) on our 5 month old boy and they hold up really well overnight. The only time he wakes up wet is if his pee-pee is not pointed down when his diaper was put on. If it is sideways or up then we experience pee leakage.
When this happened with our oldest I called Pampers. They asked how the diapers were fitting him. They explained that for boys it is crucial for the diaper to fit comfortable to the belly button. If it is smaller it likely means there is not enough absorbency for the baby.
With that said, sometimes it still was not enough when our boys got older. At about 2 we finally had to use Diaper Doublers for our youngest. They are now called Diaper Booster Pads by Select Kids and come in a 30 pack. They look like a maxie pad and go inside the diaper to add more pee catching ability. You can buy them at Babies R Us and other locations. Let me know if you would like a photo of the package since they changed recently.
Huggies makes a night diaper. I haven’t used it but it might help. Going up a size is what I did when my little guy did that from size 2 to 3.
Best advice I ever got was form my aunt. She said to but the really good diapers for at night. Either try a size larger of your current brand, or the Huggies overnight diapers. I’ve done both tricks with each of my boys. Each one was different. Another thing you can do is to change him right before you go to bed to maximize your sleeping time with a baby in a diaper that’s not full.
Here’s a Twitpic of what I was talking about above: http://twitpic.com/tqvzl
Bigger size and penis pointed down.
i would `try the next size up. my son uses cloth diapers but we use the all in ones so we don’t add an extra pad. so at night we usually use the pam
My brother loves the Cruisers….
as i was saying before my son went slap happy on the laptop. we usually use the pamper cruisers
and I agree point it down….. I babysat A LOT!!! lol
I second the cloth diaper recommendation! Our girl is a bit younger than Monkey, and we LOVE them! They really aren’t that much work, they’re cute, you save a ton of money(!!!), and like the previous person said, you can make them more absorbent for nighttime.
I recently started using pampers baby dry, but after having leaking problems (poop for us)… I’m definitely going back to huggies little snugglers. I liked pampers swaddlers but in my opinion, pampers swaddlers are slightly smaller than huggies, so when you first move up a size, try pampers….but then switch back to huggies. Always point a boy’s “boy parts” downwards. Also, I saw another comment complaining about poop going up the back of the diaper…the huggies little snugglers diapers have a “pocket” in the back that catches all the poop (especially important for breastfed babies).
We never liked the Pampers much after we got done with the Swaddlers size from the hospital. The Pampers have a scent to them and it caused Darling Girl to get a MAJOR rash all over her butt. I know, TMI. So we switched to Huggies.
They make a Huggies Overnight diaper and I LOVE that diaper. They start at size 3 (and the only place I could find the 3’s is Babies R Us). That’s the only nighttime diaper we’ve used that doesn’t leak. I know Pampers makes an overnight diaper now, but I’ve never tried it.
I will also agree with what basically everyone else has said, it might be time to go up a size in diapers. And don’t forget to put the pee-pee down!
As a side note, something that worked really well for us at night was to put the waterproof mattress cover on the mattress, then one sheet, then another waterproof mattress cover, then another sheet. So if you have to do a change, you only have to pull of the top sheet and mattress cover. Of course, if they pee through the next night, you’re back at square one…
My friend used these with her son so that she wouldn’t have to change the cute sheet if there was an accident, I don’t know much about diapers but these things are really cool!

We use cloth diapers and haven’t had a problem. When she started wetting more, we started double stuffing (we use Fuzzi Bunz), so she has two inserts instead of one. It makes her butt look like a big round marshmallow at bedtime, but it works for us!
It sounds like his diapers are too small and his wee wee is pointing up, which I think hurts the little guy. Huggies Overnights are the best. You can get size 3s from Diapers.com.
It looks like everyone has covered the basic tips so far, but to address the other issue of the hassle of changing sheets all the time, I got a great tip from ParentHacks- I put on a mattress pad, then a sheet, then repeat for 3 layers. Then, if we do have a leak (or spit up, or snotty nose etc.) I just have to take off the top layer, toss it in the laundry, and the bed’s still ready to go. Added bonus is the extra sheets aren’t taking up room in his dresser anymore! Really, we haven’t had too many leaks at night for this to come in handy, but I think when he’s older it will really come in handy, especially since hearing my brother’s story of their 2 year old waking up in the night sick (with grossness coming from BOTH ends…) and how awful it was trying to get her cleaned up AND the bed cleaned up at 2 am.
Also, we’ve been using Luvs with minimal leakage issues, and both the downward pointing penis (sorry, but I feel silly calling it weird names, hope nobody minds a little anatomically correctness…) and moving up a size tricks have helped us!
It might be time to use the Huggies Overnights at night. We have been doing that since our son was about 4 months old. He uses Pampers Baby Dry during the day.
I was a big fan of huggies overnight. And layering the sheets
They do have a store brand overnight too I tried when things were slim but I always went back to huggies when possible.
Yay for a good heavy sleeper though
I can’t offer help with the diapers. We cloth diaper and if we used disposables, we use Huggies, just cause that’s what we got as a gift way back when…He leaked poop the other day while we were out in them, but I think he needs a larger size.
But I will repeat that the Ultimate Crib Sheet is awesome! We’ve had a couple late-night leaks and spitups. You just whip off that bad boy in a jiffy and lay baby down on the clean sheets underneath. Wash the UCS in the morning, put it back on and you’re good to go. No changing sheets in the middle of the night or morning.

I agree on the cloth diapers. We use pocket diapers with extra hemp inserts and we don’t have leaks anymore, not even 12-13 hours in the same diaper all night.
When we used disposables, Huggies worked better for us than Pampers, especially after the Swaddlers stage.
I’d be happy to send you more cloth diaper info if you’re interested; lots of cloth diaper websites are running sales right now, too.
We had the same problem…switched to Huggies Overnites at night and now never have had a leak since
I agree with the commenters above, Huggies Overnights. They are WONDERFUL! No more leaky diapers.
Until you find a better diaper, I would suggest laying a waterproof change pad between baby and the sheet
Hi Jane,
Monkey is almost the same age as my baby and I believe they are drinking the same amount of formula. Here’s what I am using and it seems to work, no leaks so far. Huggies Stage 1-2 Diapers. Like Monkey, Natty sleeps 12-13 hours, but I usually go in and do a quick diaper change around 10pm before I go to sleep. She really doesn’t mind it and she goes right back to sleep after. If the diaper doesn’t smell like pee at night before I go to bed, my husband will definitely do a quick diaper change before he heads to work at 4:30am. Again, this doesn’t disrupt her sleep. If he doesn’t change her diaper, she’s up at 6:30am these days for a quick diaper change and bottle which settles her back to sleep until 9:00am.
Doing this extra task may sound like a hassle, but it keeps your baby comfortable (I’m sure he will appreciate it) and it saves you the work you would have to do to change his outfit, mattress sheets, etc. Hope this helps.
Now, stay tuned as I just upped Natty’s formula amount to 180ml/feeding times that by 5 bottles in one day. I hope I don’t experience any leaky diapers!
We had this problem. We were advised to buy the next size up even though he hadn’t reached the weight requirement. Worked like a charm. No leaky diapers since! Good luck!
Out son was a heavy wetter for a while–we solved it by using diaper doublers. There are many variations–a cloth diaper insert will work, you could double the diaper (use two at once), or you could buy an actual product called a diaper doubler (which is what we did for several months). Eventually our son stopped wetting so much at night. Good luck.
My guy is 6 months and he has never leaked through his diaper-we use Luv’s which is guaranteed not to leak-if it does I will return them. The only time I had a problem is when I didn’t pull the tabs tight enough and we had a small leak. Otherwise he can sleep through the night till about 4am when he wakes himself up cause he’s got soggy bottom.
You’ve already gotten great advice, but here’s mine. Try Huggies. They have an elastic type band in the back that is great for “holding stuff in”. Also I’ve heard of people putting one size larger on at night.
I didn’t read through the other comments but just wanted to tell you that we had the same problem with our son. We moved up a size and made sure to point him down during every change. Now we know when to move up a size because he’ll pee through again. He’s 19 months old and we have learned that moving up a size helps with the pee throughs! Hope something works out for you!
I just thought of another thing to share. The weight information on diapers isn’t always accurate. We’ve had Darling Girl in size 4 diapers since she only weighed about 15 pounds, but the size 3’s weren’t fitting right around her chubby baby thighs and she was leaking. I generally go by the philosophy that when the diaper starts to leak with not very much stuff in it, it’s time to go up a size.
Try going up a size in your diapers, that might help. Also, ensure that monkey’s penis is pointing down in the diaper or he’ll pee up and over the top.
If that fails, try fleece pjamas, because they will absorb the pee that leaks out while monkey sleeps and probably not make it onto the sheets then you won’t have to change them every day.
Good luck!
I had the same problem with the Swaddlers. We used the one pack of them we bought and planned to switch to cloth, but unfortunately they didn’t work out. We’re using Luvs and they’re working great. The only time we’ve had nighttime leaks is when I didn’t change her diaper right before putting her down for the night. That’s only happened once or twice. I was surprised since they’re a good bit less expensive than other brands, but you can’t argue with result!
I LOVE pampers, and we’re still in size 2’s. I used the Huggies and had the leaky diaper from pee, and that was going from our house to the pediatricians; not at night. My son leaks from his diaper b/c his poops are so big. I think it just happens sometimes. Good luck on fixing your leaky diaper probs! Do share what you try and what works!
Another Huggies Overnighter fan here. When/if it starts leaking, go up a size. Luvs during the day.
