I love this song! I had made it my theme in my baby’s room. I had my husband make a wood sign for over my daughter’s bed. It reads, “You are so precious to me, sweet as can be, baby of mine” and tied it at the top with a huge ribbon. I cry every time I hear that song and see the Dumbo movie.

Wow, great post! I love Allison Kraus but hadn’t heard this song, just played it…now I wanna memorize it so I can sing it to my monkey, being sung to is one of his fav. things! Now I’m wanting to see Dumbo:) Anyway, loved your comment about enjoying the scenery on a detour, I should say this to myself during one of those moments when I’m rushing around and frustrated by the new pace of things….thanks for all of your great posts, always look forward to reading your blog!

I adore that song. I’ve never heard that version, but definitely the one from Dumbo. It’s the part where Dumbo’s mom gets locked up because she acts wild when Dumbo is threatened and Dumbo sneaks out to see her. She slips her trunk through the bars of the cage and rocks him in it while the song plays. I sing it to my niece and nephews when I put them to sleep and will absolutely sing it to my babies when I have them.

We love that song in our home too. I sang it to Charlotte in the hospital, but I couldn’t remember all the lyrics, so we made up some of our own family-specific lyrics. Our new version is off-key (WAY off-key) and the words don’t always fit quite right, but I adore it. The best part is that Charlotte is old enough now to finally recognize when certain parts – certain facial expressions and noises – are coming, so she gets happy just waiting for it!

Reminds me of when he was just a few weeks old and screaming in the grocery store. I was getting all sorts of dirty looks from fellow shoppers. All I could think was, “Are you the same people who like to peek and coo at him when he’s sleeping sweetly? Are you the same people who wanted to touch and talk to my belly when I was pregnant?”

Oh, man. I love that song. I posted the lyrics a few months back when I was newly pregnant after hearing the song come on Pandora. I cried, too. It’s such a beautiful, beautiful song. There’s another one called “Turn Around” that is also beautiful. It’s about a little girl, but really you could switch the lyrics very easily to be about a little boy.

I love this song and sing it to my daughter at bed time. I first heard this song from Bette Midler on her Beaches movie/Soundtrack. She often asks for it by name at night for us to sing it to her.
