Desperate times call for desperate measures… or flipping the baby mattress

by Jane on September 10, 2010 · 11 comments

baby mattressAfter 3.5 weeks of Monkey not sleeping for very long in his crib, we had a small victory last night.  He went down around 7:30pm & didn’t wake up until 1am.

To all of those of you that might not think this is a success, believe me, it is.  He’s been consistently waking up about an hour after going to bed & we’ve had to go in his room numerous times to try to get him back down.

Last night was different, thank you God.  He did cry for a couple of seconds about 8:30pm & Tarzan & I looked at each other like, “What the hell is going on with him?” Then to our surprise, he went back to sleep.

ON. HIS. OWN.

We went ahead & celebrated that little victory too.  He used to be able to soothe himself back to sleep all of the time in the past, but lately he hasn’t been able to do that & it’s been very, um, frustrating, to say the very least.

So my husband & I high-fived each other & held our breath that he would continue to sleep.  A few hours later (around 1am) we heard crying & Tarzan went upstairs.  He changed his diaper because it was apparently “awful” & then brought him to our bed, which was fine with me.

I’ll admit that it would have probably been in our best interest to try to get Monkey to sleep in his own room for the rest of the night, but we were both so tired & took the lazy way out.

So what did I do differently that night?  I decided to flip Monkey’s mattress.  & who knows if that really did the trick to make him sleep longer or if it was just a fluke…

We have the Colgate Classica III mattress for Monkey.  One side is for babies & it’s super firm.  Like a rock almost.  The other side is for toddlers & it’s a bit softer.  It also conforms to his body, which is how our Tempur-Pedic mattress is that he’s been sleeping on.

Anyways I thought that maybe, just maybe, it would mimic our bed & he would sleep longer in his crib.  I guess only time will tell, but I hope that the worst of Monkey’s sleep is behind us.  I’ll take him waking up at 1am any time over him waking up hourly.  It’s really rough.  I don’t even remember him waking up that frequently when he was a newborn.

We tried everything to get him to sleep.  Last night I gave him some Ibuprofen, along with his antibiotic for his ear infection, & we turned the mattress around.  That’s it, but you bet your butt that I’m going to do the exact.same.thing tonight & I’m also going to keep my fingers crossed that I figured out the magic combination of Monkey (& us) getting some decent sleep.

Finally.

Ooooh Jane,
Every time I read your posts now, I cringe thinking what's in store for me and the twins down the road...lol. They sleep through the night from 7:30pm to 7:30am, so I know I'm spoiled. I'm just afraid to think that this whole waking up at night thing is gonna hit me again....but with twice the army. Keep posting though, so I know how to plan accordingly. Hang in there. This too shall pass...er....I think.....:)

Oh my, that sounds rough. I have a friend who has gone through so much struggle waking up all night long every few hours and she had MAYBE a total of 5 hours of sleep if she was lucky. I was a lucky parent and my daughter has pretty much slept through the night since she was about 2 weeks old. I hope this sleep schedule lasts!

Mira AND Leia slept through the night last night. I think I can count the times on one hand that it's happened. They like to take turns or both refuse to sleep. Leia is generally my good night sleeper, crappy napper, but Mira is always up at least 1 a night, but likes to nap for 2-3hrs a day. I can't win. At least they're both better sleepers than their big sister ever was and is. She's 3 and we still can't get her to sleep in her own bed all night.

We have been going through the same thing. Our little Monkey was going to bed at 7pm, then getting up once a night at about 11pm for a sippy cup of formula then back to sleep till atleast 8am. This went on for months consistantly. Then one day it stopped. He was back to getting up like every 1-2 hours. It was horrible!! After about 4 days of that he slept through the night one night!! I thought HOLY CRAP! DId I just figure out it!! We had a minor change with the sippy cup and a 7:30 bedtime instead of 7pm. So the next night we tried the exact thing again and waited. No luck. It was a one time fluke that he slept from 7:30pm to 7am. But since then he is back to his up once a night. He goes to bed now between 7:30 and 8:00pm and sleeps till 7:30 or 8:00am. Who knows why but we go through the change/lack of sleep like once every other month.

Hope your good luck continues. Keep doing what works for you!

Stop bringing that baby into bed with you! I'm telling you, he's going to realize all he has to do is cry and Mommy and Daddy come and wisk him away to baby heaven (I mean really, what baby in his right mind wouldn't want to sleep with Mommy and Daddy over his crib?)

Congrats on your victory... We are all over the place with sleep...one night she will sleep for 3 hours before waking the next night it will be 15 minutes before she is awake again then liek on tuesday night she sleept from 8:00am till 5:15am I can not figure out what is different, we do the same routine every night.... its so frustrating... I hope you get monkey back sleeping well soon.. maybe his ear infection is causing him to wake...

We had a small victory the other night as well! He slept from 8:30 to 2:30am. I actually checked on him twice during that time - that shows how frequently THAT happens around here these days. Of course, it was not to be celebrated long. Last night he was back to waking up every 2 hours. These molars are finally close to being in - I'm hoping we can go back to our once-a-night waking soon. I'm so exhausted I can't see straight.

Hope the mattress flip helped!

Let us know what happens tonight. Hope that was the trick!!

We've had the "my mattress isn't good enough anymore" talk with my little dude too. After coming back from vacation with a cushy hotel crib mattress, his basic toddler mattress wouldn't cut it apparently. So we now have a twin bed on the floor, one with a nice expensive pillowtop mattress. You do what works!

you must be exhausted! just reading your post I'm exhausted!
