OK, I’m going to admit something to you… When Pregnant Jane goes to the grocery store, she picks up a gallon of ice cream now that she’s pregnant. It’s happened the last 2-3 times, and I’m sure will continue to happen. And frankly, I don’t want her buying any more of it!
We never had ice cream in the house. Maybe one every 4 months or so. But now that it’s here, I just can’t help myself! Ice cream has become “MY” comfort food or something!
At night before I go to bed, I’ll watch a little TV and the ice cream in the freezer starts saying, “Tarzan.. Tarzan… Come eat a bowl of me!”
So I walk up to the freezer and plop some ice cream in a bowl and watch TV for a little while.
Wait a second… What the hell is going on here? I’m not the one pregnant. Jane is pregnant! I’m not even a huge fan of ice cream, but I keep eating the darn stuff every night. I don’t want to gain 30 pounds before our baby is born! What is happening to me!? What did I do to deserve this?
Am I suffering from pregnant father food cravings?
My weight is going to skyrocket if I keep this craziness up! It’s like I’m also having pregnancy cravings! This is serious!
Does this have to do with the “pregnant husband” term I’ve been hearing about? Does this mean I’ll be gaining the weight that Jane also gains?
Why am I an ice cream freak now? Is it the stress of everything going on? Is it the stress of mentally preparing to become a father? What is it? What on earth is happening to me!?
Why do I now have a late night ice cream addiction and how can I stop?
Is there an Ice Cream Eaters Group for Dads-to-be that I could join?
Jane is only 12 weeks pregnant – I’m going to weigh 1000 pounds if I keep this ice cream addiction pregnant father food addiction craving crazy thing up!
Help!

hey look at it this way it could be much worse… my dad got all of the preggo symptoms with both me nad my little sister and gained all the weight too (my step mom never once threw up when she was pregnant with my sister, but my dad had his head in the toilet every morning lol) my father in law was the same way…
My hubby was getting the heart burn and headaches before e deployed, now he’s fine feeling human again and starting to loose the weight he put on from my cravings while he was home hahaha
Hey Peta,
Oh yes… Your husband is not alone. That’s for sure! Since writing the post above I’ve come to the conclusion that if a father-to-be doesn’t gain at least 10-40 pounds during his wife’s pregnancy then somethings wrong. lol
Man just writing that made me want ice cream. Jane didn’t pick any up when she went grocery shopping, but I think there is a tiny bit left over from before… unless Jane got to it during her 3 AM snack this morning!
Hi Tarzan,
I am 10 weeks closer to 11 weeks and i have never seen my man eat so much, I was wondering if this was normal but seems he is not alone, he has actually gained more weight then me hehe
Good luck with the pregnancy, cravings and everything else that goes along with becoming a dad.
Hey BrookeH… LOL! You bring a lot into perspective when it comes to pregnancy and weight gain for BOTH the soon-to-be mom and dad. I’m realizing it’s not just common for the father to gain weight along with his wife, but it must be the way nature intended it.
I mean we’re going to need all those extra calories in us to keep us going taking care of a newborn, then chasing a baby around, then once s/he stars walking… look out!
OK, I’m feeling a little better about all this… that is until I can’t button my own jeans!
Congrats by the way
Well Tarzan I think you should just keep eating that ice cream and quit complaining! The least you can do is help poor Jane not feel like as much of a fat-ass as she gets bigger every week while also developing a hundred other pregnancy symptoms you’ll never have to deal with! I’m 34 weeks along with our first and my husband has joined right in the pregnancy cravings/weight gain. I admit I’ve helped this expansion of his waistline along a bit. I mean, I really didn’t want to look at his flat, 33″ waist while I was expanding from a size 4/6 to outgrowing not only my sister’s size 14′s, but also my size L and XL maternity pants!!! I’m 5’9″ and started at 132 and have gone up to 210! So I know alllll about eating ice cream and what it does to your waistline! By the way….my husband said he was 168 when we got pregnant….on monday he weighed in at 197. I won’t cry if he ends up weighing as much as me. lol
Hey John, good point. I’m sure Jane and I will be going on a diet and hitting the gym hard once the baby arrives. And yes, what it all comes down to is making sure that Jane is happy, full, and eating whatever her body is telling her that she needs.
As for me, my body doesn’t need any of it, but it sure tastes good!
When the food is there in the house and if it something that you are not used to having, I can see where the cravings are coming from. The most important thing here to is make sure you wife and her baby are happy and taken care of. The two of you can always loose the weight together after the baby is born.
@ Laurie Tam – Three girls? Is your husband OK? Three girls? I have much respect for the man. Believe me, I’ll be sharing a lot of info and my thoughts on this blog since we’re keeping it a secret – and will ALWAYS keep it a secret from our friends and family. So sorry guys… I’ll be sharing all of the ’secret’ thoughts we have! I’ll also go check out your blog….
My comment to Tarzan: lmao As of this moment, he is still knocked out from being a daddy to three girls. lmao
I can’t believe they are 3 years apart from each other. It’s weird…
OK – just looked at your blog. Nice job! I do however have some thoughts/comments.
If I were looking for a freelance writer (which by the way I do from time to time) and I landed on your blog, and I wanted to contact someone right away, I’d be lost on how to contact you on your blog. I’d also want to know a little more about what you do. Do you write articles? Blog posts? Ebooks? Press Releases?
My comment to Tarzan: I write articles and blog posts. I might want to consider doing Press releases since I would love to do that soon if possible. As for ebooks? I’m no expert on making one so I am still on a learning curve. Been a writer since late July 2008 starting with Ehow site.
If you want, you can email me at lauriehomebusiness@gmail.com
I am jealous and wanting to learn more on how you made your blog look so good as well as some other people I know who made their blog look so good instead of what was provided by blogspot, wordpress, etc places to get free blog.
Just a thought, I’d add a spot somewhere that has a blurb about what you do, the type of clients you work with, and a very easy way to contact you about my project. Just some thoughts – not sure if they are a help or not, but just thought I’d throw that out there for you.
Thanks a bunch Tarzan. When I was pregnant myself, I was scared but boy. Did my prayers get answered. To all of the other moms who are going to throw stones at me, I never had any c section. And I’m 5’0 tall. Anybody can email me directly at lauriehomebusiness@gmail.com I hope this helps and I would love to be one of the writers to get hired by you. I always love helping others when i can. It’s tough being a parent especially as a mom. I am still breastfeeding my youngest and will quit a few months after she turn 2. That’s what I did with my other two that I have. Funny how big they get. My 7 year old is 4’4 and I’m 5’0. Yikes…….
I got a ton of emails (Jane and I share the email here) and saw a bunch of comments come in. I went downstairs and asked Jane what in the heck she did… She said while she’s watching TV she’s in our Twitter account.
I logged into Twitter and saw that she is going crazy Twittering, adding friends, and commenting. Whew! You go Jane! Anyway…
@ really bad parent – I heard some guys do go through some things – even all the way to the extreme with having morning sickness! I’m not at that point and I really hope I don’t go there. But yes, if after our baby is born and I’m sitting there in the rocker trying to breast feed, I think it would be time for me to be admitted!
@ Courtney – Well that makes me feel better – NOT! Seriously? 30 pounds? Then 20 pounds? I’m in trouble then. I must confess to you that tonight I had a bowl of ice cream with Jane after dinner. Jane took out the box of ice cream and knew that I couldn’t resist. This pregnancy is bad news for my waistline! At least Jane’s belly will be growing for a great reason – mine will be growing because of all the ice cream I’m eating lately. Oh boy… 30 pounds? I think I’m on track for at least double that at this rate!
@ Kaylee – Thanks! Do you have a blog so we can follow you?

Very interesting from new dad’s perspective. As they say. Whatever the pregnant lady goes through, the significant other in some way go through that too.
My hon and I have three girls now (7, 4 and a year old which are still shocking here despite that I’m 29).
Anyway, if you can, come check out my blog and let me know what you think.
Laurie
I am having fun following this!
My husband gained 30# with my first pregnancy and 20# with my second. It is a what the wife eats i will too thing lol. I hope all is going well!
Courtney’s last blog post..Ok Ok Im Here
It’s good for the man to go through as much of the process as possible – so yes, cravings are normal. If you start breastfeeding the child when he/she arrives, that’s when you ring the alarm.
