Pregnant Jane just ran to the grocery store after we spent a good 15 minutes trying to figure out what we need. She’s only 12 weeks pregnant and already I have a good idea of what life will be like for the rest of her pregnancy when it comes to food…
A nightmare!
Over the last week, Pregnant Jane’s food cravings combined with the foods that don’t sound good to her are a complete mismatch on the foods I want. And the crazy thing about this is that I’m not a picky eater whatsoever!
So long story short, it looks like we’ll be eating completely different dinners most of the time. One night I’ll have chicken and veggies and Jane will have this turkey stuff that she makes with taco seasoning. I guess it’s like hamburg, but made from turkey so it’s healthier. I’m not a big fan of it, but she loves it.
Other nights I’ll have fish. She’ll make a baked potato and maybe some beans or something.
What this all comes down to is that we’ll be making two separate dinners most nights. All of a sudden I feel like I’m the one who is a picky eater! Jane just craves carbs and sometimes sweet things right now. I’m not going to argue with that because I understand a women’s body craves what the baby needs. But I also remind her everyday (well, most days) that the doctor told her to eat lots of protein and to try to eat every 3 hours.
Anything to do with protein doesn’t sound good to Jane at all lately. But for me, I like to eat a lot of protein for dinner so I’m not hungry later in the night.
I realize it’s a no-win scenario for me or Jane. We’ll just have to live with having to cook separate meals for dinner most nights.
I wonder if this is normal for soon-to-be parents? Or I wonder if the soon-to-be fathers give in at some point and just eat whatever their wife makes for dinner – which is how many gain the 10, 20, 30, or more pounds while their wife is pregnant!
Any of you going through this now or have you already gone through this food nightmare?
Are there any solutions besides me giving in and sucking up the carb-full dinners?
Oh and by the way…
I didn’t even mention the word ice cream to Jane when she was making the list. (Read this post about my issue with ice cream.)
How much do you want to bet she comes home with one of those one gallon jugs!? And just so you know, I did not have one drop of ice cream yesterday… although I think I’m starting to get the shakes from ice cream withdrawals!
P.S… I just realized I gave Jane my debit card to pay for the groceries. Handing a 12 week pregnant woman a debit card to go grocery shopping with, WHILE she is hungry was not a good move on my part!
UPDATE: Pregnant Jane Just Got Back…
Shortly after I posted this blog post, Jane came back from grocery shopping. I saw this as a perfect photo opportunity!
The first photo is of Jane holding just a FEW of her little *snack* items. And believe me… it’s just so funny to see Pregnant Jane with these types of food. Before Jane was pregnant, she NEVER EVER ate this stuff. Ever. And now she can’t get enough! Anyway, here’s pregnant Jane with some goodies:

And now, I am almost embarrassed to show this next photo… I have NEVER seen a pantry this stuffed. Our pantry was never even close to 1/2 as full as this before Jane got pregnant. Fast forward a few grocery shopping trips later, and now we have enough food to open our own grocery store for pregnant women!

So there you have it folks. Welcome to my pregnancy food nightmare. And also welcome to our pantry.
Oh… Jane didn’t buy any ice cream! YES YES YES!

For me it was Pineapple. It was bad.
1) A co-worker tossed his Starbucks fruit plate into the garbage...the closed container had one piece of pineapple in it...it drove me nuts! I finally had to ask someone to take the garbage out, because I couldn't stop thinking about that lone piece of pineapple.
2) I quickly figured out how to use the pineapple corer someone gave us as a gag gift one year. I began to buy a whole pineapple a day, get home and eat the whole thing before dinner. And, still had room for a full dinner.
3) after one week of pineapple as an appetizer for each meal, I went in for my glucouse screening. The results came back a little high. Doctor asked me if I was eating a lot of sweets. Alex replied - No, but she's eating WHOLE pineapples...
Then, the doctor put me on pineapple restriction. I could eat anything but pineapple.
And, jeeeesus. I can still smell pineapple a mile away. Yuuuuum. I wasn't like this before I was pregnant, and our baby is 4 1/2 months old.
