15 weeks pregnant: Runny nose, sneezing, and snot

by Jane on February 2, 2009 · 7 comments

15-weeks-pregnant-runny-noseI’m 15 weeks pregnant and my nose is still runny and I’m sneezing so much!  This happened right at the beginning, after I got my BFP.  I went from hardly ever sneezing and very rarely having a runny nose to needing to keep kleenex on hand all the time, you know, just in case.

I didn’t know what it was about being pregnant that caused me to sneeze, have a runny nose during the day, and then a snuffy nose at night.  Well, I got an email this morning that answered my question.

Now it all makes sense.

The insides of my nose are swelling from all the pregnancy hormones and the increasing blood flow.  Ahhh.  I honestly never knew that this was a pregnancy symptom, but not like I checked out unusual pregnancy symptoms before it was my time to do so.

The email said that the pregnancy hormones and increased blood flow could also cause nosebleeds.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed that nosebleeds will not be a part of my pregnancy because the mere thought of it makes me cringe.  Granted, I’ve never had a nosebleed, but it just seems like something isn’t right for your nose to be spilling out blood.

So far, so good.  I’m 15 weeks pregnant and have not had a nosebleed.

(Knocking on wood right now so that I don’t jinx myself!)

The cure?  Keep a lot of kleenex on hand and try sleeping with a humidifier in your bedroom.
It’s fun to learn about all the many joys that pregnancy has:  Runny nose, sneezing, tons of snot, swollen hands and feet, wider feet, wider nose, and I’m sure there are many more that I’ll come into contact with as I get further along in my own pregnancy.  Are there any pregnancy symptoms that you were unaware of before getting pregnant that you want to share?  If so, leave a comment to enlighten me!

Oh goodness is that what it is?? I thought I caught the cold.....I just gotten over a "cold" and now caught another one. Both times my nose is running, some sneezing, and major nose stuffiness during the night. Last two nights drove me insane. I'll ask around to borrow a humidifier.

I snored *so* loudly during my pregnancy that I would wake up my husband even though he would wear ear plugs to sleep. Sometimes I would even go in the other room to sleep, and he said he could still hear me. The good news is, that all that went away a couple weeks after I gave birth, so just hang in there!

I remember feeling like Mrs. Potato Head with a huge red nose that rivaled Rudolph's. Ugh!

Ever since I got pregnant I get dizzy a lot more often. I get dizzy rolling over in bed, laying back in the bath tub to wash my hair and bending over to tie my shoe. The room spins and I feel like I am going to fall over. Weird.

Ooh pregnancy rhinitis is just not fun. I thought I kept getting sinus infections... but I finally read about all those swelling mucous membranes related to pregnancy and now I realize it is just another wonderful reminder of the bean in the belly. The other symptom I didn't anticipate is my infuriating road rage. My new favorite word while driving is "jacka$$". Sheesh!

Ha, ha - You totally should wear them during the day. That would be such a good laugh! Thanks for the Breathe Right recommendations, maybe that will help someone. I tried those once, but, believe it or not, my nose is too small and none of the sizes fit as they were supposed to. :(

I've been really stuffy, especially at night. My SIL recommended the Breathe Right strips and they have been great! I just wish I could wear them during the day without looking like a freak! :)
