How have you been referring to the baby you are growing in your pregnant belly? There are so many different names that you could call your little fetus, so I’m interested in knowing what you prefer.
It seems like the most popular nicknames are: Peanut, Bean (Jellibean, or The Bean), and Sweet Pea. All taken from the size of the fetus during a particular week in pregnancy. None of those names ever stuck for me though.
Sure, it’s the size of a sweet pea in week 6 of your pregnancy, but what about when you are in week 20 and it’s the size of a cantaloupe. It doesn’t seem as appropriate (to me, anyways) to call it “the bean”.
I just might be weird, who knows!
Before I was pregnant, I’d only thought about this nickname thing once and that was when some of our friends were pregnant. Really, our only friends that have ever been pregnant, but that’s besides the point. I think they told us when they were 7 weeks pregnant, so naturally I asked how big it was. (See, I knew all about the fruit comparison thing even before I was pregnant!)
Their baby was the size of a blueberry, hence our nickname of it being “Baby Blue”. It seemed cute and appropriate and the name just stuck with us. But for some reason I can’t picture myself referring to my baby as something that happened weeks ago.
The nickname for our baby has been “Baby (insert initial of last name here)”. It seems to work for us and I think it’s a lot cuter than referring to your baby as an “it”.
Just give it a name, ok?!
So, I’m just curious what nickname you have for your little peanut. Or jellybean. Or Sweet Pea.

We decided that we wanted a very unique nursery theme….Jimmy Buffett style! lol I think it is safe to say we’ll be one of the few (if not the only ones) with that style nursery. So the baby’s nickname is Fin after one of his more popular songs. It seems to have stuck pretty well as everyone is calling the baby that now and quite a few have told us we should keep the name…permanently. I don’t know about that! But we have gotten so used to calling “it” Fin, it will probably take a while to undo it even after we find out if its a boy or a girl. I’m just waiting for the baby shower when we get something with Fin embroidered on it!
Yesterday, I managed to get tickets to his concert in April so Fin will be going to its first concert at a VERY early age!
We’ve gotten quite a few crazy looks over our theme and people always seem to ask ‘you’re kidding, right?’ But we like it, its unique and it will grow with the baby. That was a long answer just to tell you we’re calling the baby Fin! lol
When my wife was pregnant everyone called the baby those tacky nicknames like “Peanut.” But I wanted something different. So, I came up with…
Cletus. Cletus the Fetus.
My wife hated it and I got more than a few funny looks at first when I’d repeat it in public, but it was different and I thought it was endearing. All my guy friends thought it was funny but the women…not so much.
Bear cub.
Our last 2 were Chickpea and Jellybean, but we lost them. So, we decided to get away from the “bean” names.
My sister’s is Tad, after tadpole.
Daddy Files – that is hilarious!
Is it bad I call mine the parasites? I don’t honestly remember what we called Adia. Now she’s often referred to as the gremlin.
My husband calls my baby Little Gizmo. His nickname is Gizmo and has been for a while. I use My Little Mini Me, or Bubbies.
Jane, we could change what we’ve been calling “Baby (our initial)” to our little monkey. After all, I Tarzan. You Jane. Makes sense.

Oooh Oooh Eeee! Eeee!
at first ti was the blog because that exactlywhat the first ultrsound looked like
now is just bubba
we are not very creative as you can see

Peta, have you had too many ginger ales this evening?
I think my ex and I used to call her ‘boo-boo’….or maybe that was after she was born? Just writing that I realized that it sounds like we thought she was a mistake! LOL….it wasn’t like that, honest:-)
Helen’s last blog post..Gonna Be a Wordpress Girl
We call our baby, monkey. We just both like monkeys and if its a boy will probably do a monkey theme in the nursery. Not safari. Just monkey. A lot of it has to do with all the morning sickness feeling like Monkey’s doing summersaults in my tummy. And I’m only 11 weeks.
Stacey – I think your Jimmy Buffet theme sounds so cool and very different! You have got to take pictures of the nursery when it’s finished bc I would love to see what the final result looks like. I think Fin is cute too. You could always keep that as a nickname when the baby is born.
Daddy Files – You made me laugh out loud with Cletus the fetus. Brilliant, I love it!
MVP – Bear cub is adorable and I’m so sorry to hear about the last two.
Crysi – I don’t think it’s bad, just as long as you don’t call him/her that once he/she arrives. I referred to mine at the very beginning as the “spawn”. Not too nice sounding there.
NASB – Gizmo is super cute!
Tarzan – Besides our nicknames on here, little monkey would be adorable bc you have a weird fascination with monkeys. We’ll try using it in a sentence and see how it flows.
Peta – We called our the little blob a few times after our first ultrasound too. You are right, that’s exactly what the picture looked like!
Helen – Ha, ha. I think boo-boo is cute!
I am boring – Peanut was the name we used… then as soon as we began to guess ont eh gender it became – Peaner for a boy and Peanie for a girl… silly but now we know we are having a girl everyone calls her peanie!
Hey Kristin & Jim – It looks like I missed your comment. Oops! As you read above in my comment to Tarzan, I think the monkey nn is adorable. I also think a monkey nursery would be really cute. If you decide to do that, I hope you post pics on your blog. I’d love to see it!
Jmc2 – Too cute! I bet it will continue to stick throughout her life!
We called our baby Flipper right up until delivery. My husband thought that the early ultrasound pictures looked like a dolphin, and called my tummy Flipper… it stuck.
Proved to be a great nickname too, because that baby could PARTY in there! She was always flipping and rolling around. Toward the end when you could see body parts moving beneath my skin it made him a little ill – reminded him too much of “Alien”, apparently.
Flipper is a cute name. So many unique ones that I’ve heard through these comments. I like that! Not to sound naive, but does everyone experience seeing the body parts move beneath the skin? Just thinking about it now makes me cringe just a little.
Jane – I often tell hubby that I have 2 of his spawn in my tummy so he can never complain again.
Crysi’s last blog post..Finger Paint
i call mine wiggle-worm
When I was expecting my daughter, I called her Koco. This was after I knew that she was going to be a girl. I got tired of sharing the names I was thinking about giving her and getting strange reactions and too many opinions. I later gave her a name but I still call her Koco, as do many in my family.
Until my twelve week ultrasound yesterday, I’d been calling our baby ‘the shrimp’. My first ultrasound photo reminds me of a piece of popcorn shrimp, so there you have it.
Before I knew what it was, I just called it an alien…lol It invaded MY body. And was making MY life miserable with morning sickness and what not. When I finally found out he was a boy, I’ve started calling him my lil’ dude. And my parents call him by his name, or what his name will be when he’s born.
And when I get an nasty kick to the ribs or a “low blow.” I often blurt out “gah, you monster!” …All with love of course.
My husband called our son JB – short for jelly bean, cos thats what he looked like & how big he was on the 8 week scan.
When we found out it was a boy at the 20 week scan we started calling him by his name Ryan, helps us talk to him heaps more
We called my first nephew Little Bit (didn’t find out the sex). Doesn’t have anything to do with the Goo Goo Dolls song, “Give a Little Bit,” but when I hear that song I always think of him. Name didn’t stick though.
We’re still pretty early (6 weeks) on but somehow my husband got the idea of calling baby a polywog – I think more for the satisfaction of getting to say the word polywog several times a day now than anything. Not sure how that’s going to go over when it actually looks like a baby.
We call our baby “Umms” as in “umm” we don’t know what you are yet? ( I’m 14 weeks and we will know in two and then go by name)My Mom said well it’s better then “oops” haha
I call our baby Our Little Jelly Bean. Mostly, because that’s what I’m going to use as the theme of the nursery. Well, I’m TRYING to use it. But it’s so hard to find cute Jelly Bean fabrics. I can’t find any bedding so we decided to make our own, but I don’t like any of the fabrics. If anyone has any ideas or know where I can find cute stuff for jelly beans, PLEASE let me know! Thanks!!

I called my son teddy while I was pregnant. Short for teddy graham. The ultrasound tech took a terrific pic of him where he has a little round belly and stubby arms and legs and he’s facing right at the camera. looked exactly like i had a teddy graham stuck in there.
when my step-mom was preggers with my little brother my parents would come home with the aultrasound pictures and when my siblings and I seen the first picture my older sister said he looked like little peanut. she was only about 10 weeks in.His real name is Joey and he’s 5 years old now and everybody calls him Peanut or just P.
A little bit late but I called our little gal Biscuit or Baby Biscuits. My husband grew up in a log cabin with a dirt floor, so he is a country biscuit (I say that lovingly), so our little girl is half “biscuit”.
I also called her Baby Bebop when she kicked me.
Now she’s 4 months old and I call her Biscuits & Beans because she has gas like I’ve never seen before! LOL
A little late here too
We called Julian “Pickle”. When I found out I was pregnant, I looked up one of those pregnancy calendars online and it said my fetus was only as big as a grain of rice, but shaped like a Pickle. It totally stuck…and we have family and friends that still call him Pickle to this day. although we’ve moved on to other nicknames for the most part
Name for unborn baby? Both our kids got the same one: Squiggle Wiggle. Speaking of which it’s driving me crazy so I think I’ll go lie down…I’m at 36 weeks today with #2.
we were thinking about pet names for our baby. and we decided on squirt (: no pun intended!
Well, our nickname came about by accident. At around week 9, I told my husband that I was no longer convinced that I had a baby in here, but a teeny tiny Dictator that made unreasonable demands regarding when and what I should eat. My husband said we should call The Dictator, Tator for short, and it stuck.
