Whew. Who knew planning a first birthday party could consume me this much?! I actually had the thought of “What will I do once this birthday party is over?” last night. I’ve been in party planning mode for about 3 months now & it’s cool to see everything finally coming together.

Last night I worked on the centerpieces & I love the way they turned out. I wrapped three different sized boxes with wrapping paper, bought a little dog that has a “1″ on it to sit on the top of the boxes & balloons will go on the side. It looks cute & I’m probably not doing it justice by trying to describe it. (I’ll post pictures of it after the party happens.)

My in-laws are coming in town today & I know that will take away time from setting everything up. Remember, though my in-laws mean well, they are, um, very needy, which drives me up the wall.

I know that all first birthday parties are more for the parents & I know that Monkey won’t really remember any of this, but I love that I’m going a bit overboard. It’s a celebration for me & Tarzan too – We survived our first year of parenthood. We made it!

The party is at our house & there will be about 62 people here. We aren’t having any activities (except a pinata) since the oldest child is 21 months. I think the kids (13 of them) will hang out in the gameroom & just play with the many baby toys that Monkey has. I’ve ordered most of the food, the cupcakes, & Monkey’s smash cake. I’ve also put together all of the party favors: pails & shovels for the beach with a book, sidewalk chalk, crazy straws, goldfish, bubble wand, & a rubber duck. I’ve put all of the kids names on the pails & they turned out super cute.

Speaking of Monkey’s smash cake… It wasn’t supposed to be ordered. I was supposed to make it, but after three attempts of using the Wilton Giant Cupcake Pan, I gave up & went to the professional. I spent $30 on the pan & it didn’t come with any instructions.

How hard can baking a giant cupcake really be, I asked myself. Well, apparently I’m a moron in the kitchen or it is a bit more difficult than making a regular cake. The first time was the best, except I forgot to add vegetable oil & the cake was very dry. The second try the batter overflowed & made a huge mess in my oven. And the third time it overflowed & the bottom half was still raw.

The crazy part is that I did the same thing all of the three times & it kept turning out worse & worse. The cake lady said, “Poor you. That’s why you leave this up to the professionals.” So right, so I shelled out another $50 for her to make Monkey a giant cupcake.

I also made a photo montage complete with music on a DVD. Of course I’m not going to subject everyone to watch it, but I will throw it out there & give people the option if they want to see it. It makes me cry every single time I see it because my baby just grow up so fast.

Before I end this, I want to take a little poll about opening up presents at birthday party. I’m not sure what etiquette says about opening birthday gifts in front of people, but personally, I’m not a fan. I’m so appreciative of the gifts given to Monkey, but I think it’s safe to say that I’ll be the one opening everything up & he won’t have the birthday reaction that everyone is hoping to see. I think he’ll be more interested in the wrapping paper actually.

I didn’t want to open the gifts, but some people think that is rude… Like invite me to your party & open the gift in private so you can show your true feelings about it, which is so not the case for me. I just think it’s boring to watch someone open gifts, whether it be a birthday party, a wedding shower, or a baby shower. & with over 50 people here.

Oh. My. Gosh. It’ll be LONG.

So, what’s your opinion on this & what did you do at your child’s first birthday party? I’m interested in knowing!

In those first few months Monkey slept like a champ when in his swing, like 3-4 hours. It was glorious! I knew that he wouldn’t be able to fit in his swing for too much longer, so I started the transition to his crib about a month ago.

At first it was a complete nightmare, which is shocking considering he’s slept through the night in his crib for about 4 months now. He was very sleep-deprived because he would fight his sleep & then wake up right when I put him in the crib. Then I tried the whole “drowsy but awake” thing (which totally works at night) & it was a big fail too.

What to do, what to do…

After seeking advice on Twitter, I purchased the seahorse for Monkey because everyone raved about it. Honestly, I was a little unsure, but was more than willing to try it out. Low & behold, it is a Godsend. No joke.

It works like a charm for Monkey’s morning nap.

Oh, what’s that? He’s supposed to nap more than once? Riiiight. Well, we haven’t completely mastered the afternoon nap with as much luck.

Like most babies I’m sure, Monkey fights his sleep. Oh if he only knew how awesome taking naps really are, right?!

Sometime in the afternoon (It’s never consistent as far as time goes. It could be at 2pm or at 430pm.), he’ll drink his bottle & fall asleep on me. I know that I should probably transfer him into his crib but I don’t. At least 9 times out of 10 I don’t anyways.

While I hope that I’m not instilling awful napping habits in my 6-month old, it’s just too damn sweet to move him to his crib. I figure that he’s not always going to want to nap on me, let alone even give me a hug in public, so I should cherish these moments now. It’s pure bliss to feel his chest going up & down on my chest, have his hands hanging onto my shoulders or hair, & to just savor how sweet of a moment it really is.

But clearly he won’t be napping on me when he’s, say, 4 years old & I know that this napping business isn’t magic, so is the right thing to do (for his sake) to put him in his crib after he falls asleep on me? Or is it okay for me to eat up these moments & cherish my sweet little boy sleeping so soundly on me?

Toys. Fun. Some of my best memories growing up were this time of year. And I know Jane and I will do everything we can to create the same magic for Monkey for many years to come.

Although Monkey won’t really understand what’s going on tomorrow as we’re unwrapping his presents with him, I know that tomorrow will become one of these days that I’ll never forget. A baby’s first Christmas is so special.

Tomorrow, when we wake up, I’m going to cook Jane and I a nice breakfast. Eggs, bacon, toast, and we also have some cinnamon buns that I’ll cook in the oven. We’ll have Christmas music playing, and Monkey will be the center of our attention (as he always is). We’ll then sit down by the Christmas tree and begin to open presents, one-by-one and show Monkey his new toys. Jane and I will open our presents from each other, and then relax for awhile.

Actually, I’m excited out of my mind to play with Monkey’s toys with him, so I’m sure Jane and I will be playing with Monkey for awhile. We’ll then make the long drive to Jane’s parents house and have Christmas there. I’ll be excited to come back home so I can play with Monkey’s toys – with him of course. Unless he’s tired and needs a nap, then I’ll just play with them by myself.

Anyway, I promised Jane that I wouldn’t be on my computer after 12:00 PM today and will not be on it over the next couple of days. We need to run out and do some Christmas Eve stuff in a few, but just wanted to say Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

Tarzan, Jane, and Monkey

I’m a big sucker for traditions, especially creating my own traditions with my little family.

Christmas is my favorite time of the year. Yep, I’ll admit it, I love me some presents, but this season is so much more than presents. I think I love giving presents to loved ones more than receiving (well, it’s a close tie).

I love what the season means. I love that people have smiles on their faces a lot more than any other time in the year. I love the red Starbucks cups. & I love the magic that is Christmas time.

Tarzan & I (mainly me) want to create tons of great memories with our little Monkey, so here are our traditions that we are going to start. Some of these traditions we did with our parents when we were younger & other traditions are ones that we are going to start with Monkey.

Ready?

Prior to Christmas Eve

1. Get Christmas Tree the day after Thanksgiving & spend that weekend putting out Christmas decorations.

As much as I love Christmas, I believe that it should start the Friday after Thanksgiving so that Thanksgiving is not overlooked.

2. Hide the pickle ornament in the Christmas tree.

This might get a little tricky considering Monkey could really mess up the tree looking for the pickle, but eh, it’s all for fun.

3. Take Monkey shopping for Christmas presents to donate to Toys for Tots

I’ll just say it – Both T & I were spoiled with Christmas growing up (well, even now we still are). I wouldn’t have it any other way, but I want my son to grow up being thankful & not a spoiled brat. I want to let him pick out presents to donate to kids to make their Christmases just as special as his.

4. Pay it forward by paying for a stranger’s toll, paying for a meal for someone, even simple things where no money is involved.

I love doing this even outside of the holiday season. It makes me feel so good, except that time at Chick-Fil-A. When I got up to place my order at the drive-thru, I told the cashier that I would like to pay for the previous person’s order. Big mistake. I figured I’d be paying for one meal, but I ended up paying for four meals. & at Chick-Fil-A that can be a little expensive. Oh well though. I like to think that it’ll all come back around.

5. Writing a letter to Monkey from Santa every year.

6. Getting Monkey a new ornament every year.

Christmas Eve

1. Eat Christmas Eve lunch out

I always went to church with my family on Christmas Eve night & then we went out to dinner. Dinner was a madhouse at that time, so we are going to do lunch out instead of dinner.

2. Open 1 present on Christmas Eve. Always already washed & ready to wear pj’s for that night.

I was always allowed to pick any present that I wanted to open on Christmas Eve. When I was little, I love this idea, but when I grew up, I hated it. I’m a firm believer that birthday presents should be open on your birthday. Christmas presents on Christmas. I like the idea of the pajama gift opening though. Monkey, Tarzan, & myself will all look good taking pictures on Christmas morning!

3. Leave carrots for reindeer (cookies & milk for Santa too) on Christmas Eve & look for the carrot remnants in the backyard on Christmas morning.

I love, love, love doing this. I always looked forward to searching our backyard on Christmas morning to see the carrot that Rudolph bite off while flying the sleigh off to the next house. So fun.

4. Drive around to look at Christmas lights on Christmas Eve.

Another thing that I just love doing. Growing up, we would drive around at any given time to look at Christmas lights and I like the idea of waiting until Christmas Eve to do so.

5. Watch “The Christmas Story” on Christmas Eve.

A classic movie that should be watched on Christmas Eve & be playing in the background on Christmas Day.

6. Read “The Night Before Christmas”to Monkey before bed on Christmas Eve.

Christmas Day

1. Big breakfast on Christmas morning before opening the gifts.

This year we are having eggs, bacon, toast, & cinnamon rolls. Yummy!

2. Presents from Santa are always unwrapped.

My parent’s were super smart by never having Santa’s presents wrapped for us. I just know that I would have questioned how Santa had the same wrapping paper as my parents, how he knew which presents were OUR presents in the bag, etc. It was always such a thrill to wake up on Christmas morning to find all the presents from Santa sitting out around the tree.

3. Go to my parent’s house.

What are your Christmas Traditions?

These past few weeks I’ve been a shopping fool picking up new baby toys for Monkey. So what that Monkey will only be 6 months at Christmas… He’ll have a lot of presents to open… well, make that a lot of presents that Tarzan and I will be opening for him. :) It’s his first Christmas & I want to make it memorable, if nothing else but to put a smile on my face (& Tarzan’s too)!

I know that Monkey won’t be able to open his presents, but I’m excited about the endless photo ops that will be present. I know that I’ll be wrapping all of these gifts & then unwrapping them as well, but it doesn’t matter. I’m over the moon about Christmas this year & it’s all because of my son. You only have your first Christmas once!

This is just the start of many Christmas traditions that will take place each year from now on. I’m so excited!

Many of you have asked what we’ve bought for Monkey for Christmas, so I’m going to post everything that we’ve gotten here. I’ll admit that I went into the room that I’ve been storing all of these gifts the other day & I was slightly amazed (& maybe a little embarrassed) at the amount of toys that I’ve bought so far. I know that we’ve gone overboard, but it makes me so happy to know Monkey will have a TON of new toys for him all of us to play with. (I often wonder if Tarzan is more excited about the new toys! I have to keep him away from them!)

Of course we got mostly toys that Monkey can grow into so that we can wait until his birthday to get older things (that’s the plan anyways). Along with toys, I’ve also got him some BabyLegs for his stocking, a duck that quacks, squirts water, & lights up, & a scuba swimmer that kicks, both for bath time. I also made him a “Baby ABC Book” from Shutterfly too.

So, here’s what I’ve bought for Monkey for Christmas after a TON of research….

Within its pages you’ll find Theodor Seuss Geisel’s exuberant creations Bartholomew and the Oobleck (1949), If I Ran the Zoo (1950), Horton Hears a Who! (1954), The Sneetches and Other Stories (1961), and Dr. Seuss’s Sleep Book (1962). In Bartholomew and the Oobleck, a non-rhyming Seuss story, prepare for an eyeful of green goo.

Whew! It looks like I have some wrapping to do! But I’m excited about wrapping presents, listening to Christmas music, writing in our Christmas cards, decorating… this is my favorite time of year!

And I have a feeling that it’ll be Monkey’s too. :)

So I’m wondering, which of these toys did you get your little one? Also do any of you own any of the above? How does your child like it?

With the birth of our little baby Monkey, we got way behind on some of the great products we received that needed to be reviewed – as I’ve mentioned a few times now to keep reminding myself. LOL! Now that things are calming down a little around here, Jane is back posting on our pregnancy and baby blog here, and will be getting back to Twittering.

There are several reviews we need to do – and some will include contests where you can win the item we’re reviewing or posting about!

The item that I wanted to tell you about today is the Snoogie Seat by Daddy’s Design. When the item arrived, I was excited to check this out since we decided to call our baby “Monkey” on our blog and thought this product was a prefect fit for our little guy.

When I opened up the package and took the Monkey out of the bag I noticed how soft is was – a big plus for a baby of course. I also noticed that there was a little handle on the monkey’s head to make carrying your stuffed monkey and your real-life monkey around easier.

And then the thought pooped – I mean popped into my head about Monkey peeing through his diaper, burping up, and wondered how in the heck you’d clean this Snoogie Seat by Daddy’s Design.

I flipped it over and noticed a zipper that made removing the monkey designed cover easy. I took it off, tossed it in the washing machine and then dried it. It held up well and will no doubt last many, many washes.

What’s cool about this Snoogie Seat is that the actual cushion design itself. In the image below, you can see how a baby fits right in the nicely designed cushion keeping him/her snug and safe. It’s also small enough to easily put somewhere in your baby boy or baby girl’s nursery (which is were we’ll have Monkey in it most of the time – especially when have him watch Baby Einstein DVD’s).

After Jane was feeding Monkey this AM, I put him in the monkey and propped up the Cloud B Sleep Sheep on the top, connecting it to the carry strap on the top of the monkey Snoogie Seat.

Monkey loves it and was out like a light.

I’m looking forward to trying it out on my lap with Monkey in it when I feed him Jane’s breastmilk she pumped into a bottle. Looks like it should be easy to do and comfortable for the both of us based on the photo on their website. Anything that makes fatherhood duties easier is something I’m always game for!

Also, if you purchase the Snoogie Seat for yourself or someone you know, 10% of the net proceeds go to the Children’s National Medical Center – which of course is great to see the creators of the Snoogie Seat are doing their part – very cool.

For more information and to check out the Monkey Snoogie Seat yourself (which comes in pink or brown by the way), go to: http://www.daddysdesign.com

UPDATE! Michael just emailed me and is offering a special 20% discount for our readers. :) When you order, be sure to use coupon on code: clsnoogie

We were exhausted. All we wanted was just a couple hours of sleep and neither Jane nor I had any idea how many hours we had been up in a row. Monkey was really active and maybe even a little cranky.

We were desperate and trying everything we could think of to relax our baby Monkey from: classical music, singing to him, feeding him, changing his diaper, burping him, you name it… we probably tried it. Heck, I even tried dancing for him for awhile and all that did was entertain Jane and get a tired chuckle out of her.

Finally I decided to go into his nursery to see what I could find that may do the trick. We received quite a few items from Jane’s baby shower that played music, but we needed something else. Something… relaxing.

I looked over on his bookshelf and saw the Cloud B Sleep Sheep sitting there, almost saying to me, “I am the solution you’re looking for.” I picked it up and tried to play the sounds to see what sounds it had and realized I didn’t have any batteries in it. I carried the Cloud B Sleep Sheep downstairs and saw that Jane had taken Monkey out of the swing (which had to be the 3rd or 4th time we tried moving him from the swing, to our arms, and/or to the pack-and-play) and was holding our still active little boy.

I found some batteries, loaded them into the Cloud B Sleep Sheep and started playing the sounds. I immediately stopped on the ocean waves and thought, “THIS IS IT!”

I brought it over to Jane and Monkey and played it. Within seconds Monkey calmed down and slowly his eyes began to get heavier and heavier. After a couple of minutes Jane and I carefully carried him to the pack and play and laid him down to sleep. And there he stayed, counting sheep for the next few hours thanks to the Cloud B Sleep Sheep.

The Cloud B Sleep Sheep ROCKS!

Over the last few days we’ve had that sheep running nearly non-stop when Monkey is in his swing or in the pack-and-play. We’ve been amazed at how the ocean wave sounds sooth him and put him right to sleep each and every single time!

The Cloud B Sleep Sheep features four soothing sounds for your baby: Mothers Heartbeat, Spring Showers, Ocean Surf, and Whale Songs. Our favorite is the ocean surf followed by the spring showers. I think Monkey would also agree with that order.

And I can tell you that it’s so relaxing listening to those smooth ocean waves while laying on the couch with Jane knowing our little Monkey is sound asleep. The waves have put us to sleep many times over the last week too!

In my opinion the Cloud B Sleep Sheep was one of, if not the best gift Jane received from her baby shower. I give it 4 out of 4 thumbs up. Oh, and another cool feature is the velcro straps on his head that make placing it anywhere safely a breeze.

You can check out the Cloud B Sleep Sheep on Amazon here and see that most of the reviews from people are 5 out of 5 stars. And looking at the reviews, we’re not the only new parents who have discovered that the Cloud B Sleep Sheep is one of the best items to have for your baby to help him/her fall asleep.

So do any of you have the Cloud B Sleep Sheep? What did you think of it?
